If that kind of giving becomes without fault? It is said: The giver and the patron give. Then, who is the giver? Who is the patron? Whoever dwells in himself alone and gives, that is called the giver. Whoever gives by himself and also wants to give, and is not unwilling to give, that is called the patron. Then, to whom does one give? It is said: To the basis, that is, to the suffering, the benefactors, the beloved, and the special ones. Then, who are the suffering ones? That is, those without possessions, the poor, the afflicted, those on the road, beggars, the blind, the deaf, the helpless, the dependent, and others who are similar to them, those are called the suffering ones. Who are the benefactors? For example, father, mother, advisors, healers, nurturers, secluded monasteries, famine, enemy armies, the imprisoned, and those who liberate from the fear of disease, and those who show benefit, those who show happiness, those who closely accomplish benefit and happiness, those who help in all disputes, those who rejoice together, those who grieve together, and those who do not abandon completely when that person becomes weak, and others who are similar to them, those are called the benefactors. Who are the beloved? That is, those who are kind to oneself, or kind and respectful, or those who speak affectionately, those who converse harmoniously, those who say welcome, friends and companions, or others who are similar to them, those are called the beloved. Who are the special ones? That is, the renunciates and Brahmins, renowned for their good nature, without harmful intent, and those who delight in those without harmful intent, those who are free from desire, those who have entered into practice to subdue desire, those who are free from hatred, those who have entered into practice to subdue hatred, those who are free from delusion, those who have entered into practice to subdue

Those who have entered, and any others who are similar to them, are called the special ones. What should be given? It is said: In brief, one gives things that are counted as sentient beings and things that are not counted as sentient beings. What are the things that are counted as sentient beings? For example: sons, wives, servants, maids, workers, those who live on shares, elephants, horses, cattle, sheep, chickens, men, women, boys, girls, or any other things that are similar to these, and relying on the inside, hands, feet, head, flesh, blood, fat, etc., whatever the Bodhisattvas rightly perceive and give, that is also a giving that is counted as sentient beings. But in this context, those givings are not meant. To those sentient beings, if he is the master, the authority, and the manager, then it is also reasonable to give those sentient beings to others. Even if he gives them, he himself will not be blamed, and because of that cause and condition, he will not cause others' minds to be greatly agitated, and he will not harm those sentient beings who are given to others, that is the giving of things that are counted as sentient beings, which is without fault. What are the things that are not counted as sentient beings? For example: things of wealth, things of grain, and things of land. What are the things of wealth? For example: jewels, pearls, beryl, precious conch shells, coral, stone marrow, agate, gold, silver, red jewels, right-spiraling conch shells, or any other jewels that are similar to these, or earth, or emery, or cloths, or utensils, or kinds of incense, or kinds of garlands, whatever these are, are called things of wealth. What are the things of grain? Whatever is edible and drinkable in small quantities, such as: barley, wheat, rice, beans, soybeans, sesame, cardamom, the taste of sugarcane, cheese, the taste of grapes, or anything else that is similar to these.

Those are called objects of grain. What are the objects of land? For example, the foundation of a field, the foundation of a house, the foundation of a shop, a place of merit, the foundation of a temple, or anything else similar to that, those are called objects of land. Therefore, whatever is considered a sentient being and whatever is not considered a sentient being should be given as alms. Then, with what does one give alms? It is said: with a mind that clearly focuses on intention, with a mind that is free from attachment, in order to completely give away the objects to be given, with the physical and verbal actions that arise from that in one's own and others' continuums, one gives alms. Then, how does one give alms? It is said: one gives alms with faith that looks to the future and sees the results, one gives alms respectfully with a desiring mind, one gives alms from one's own hand without contempt, one gives alms whenever those things become useful to others, one gives alms in accordance with the Dharma, one accomplishes it well with impartiality and without harming others, one gives alms purely, one gives alms kindly, one gives alms after instructing, one gives alms that are suitable and do not cause faults for oneself and others, one gives alms again and again, and one gives alms after dispelling the stains of stinginess and the stains of hoarding. One is also happy in mind before giving, one is also extremely joyful at the time of giving, and one becomes without regret after giving, that is how one gives alms. Then, why does one give alms? It is said: for example, one gives alms out of compassion for those who are suffering, for example, one gives alms in order to repay those who have helped oneself, for example, one gives alms in order to express love, respect, and care for those who are dear, for example, one gives alms to those who are special in order to desire worldly and transmundane virtues, therefore one should give alms.
