It is not easy for me to dwell in a quiet place, in an empty room, a monastery, a forest, or in remote areas. What are the obstacles to truly dwelling within? That is to say, truly dwelling within refers to tranquility (shamatha) and insight (vipassana). There are obstacles to tranquility, and there are obstacles to insight. What are the obstacles to tranquility? They are heedlessness and dwelling in a bad place. Heedlessness is like this: a person who has become heedless has their mind completely entangled by dullness and sleep, and they only experience the taste of tranquility, and because of discouragement, they focus their mind on it, and their mind becomes dark. Dwelling in a bad place is when one dwells in a place where humans or non-humans cause harm, thereby causing their mind to be outwardly distracted. This is the obstacle to tranquility, and one should know that this is the obstacle to truly dwelling within. What are the obstacles to insight? They are clinging to self and instability. Clinging to self is like this: I was born from a noble lineage, and I am not inferior, other monks are not like that, thus praising oneself, clinging and belittling others. Similarly, I think that I was born from a wealthy family, not poor. Similarly, I think that I am handsome, pleasing to the eye, and beautiful. Similarly, I think that I am learned, able to remember what I have heard, and accumulate what I have heard. Similarly, I think that my words are excellent and I have the ability of speech, other monks are not like that, thus praising oneself, clinging and belittling others, this is clinging to self. For monks like the elder successor, and those who practice brahmacharya, they do not inquire frequently, they are not humble, therefore they do not distinguish the undistinguished places for him from time to time, nor do they clarify the distinguished places. For example, in order to purify wisdom and vision, the profound meaning.

And after having thoroughly understood well through the wisdom of words, one also does not show it correctly. Thus, this is like this: it is related to the obstacle of higher seeing, clinging to self. Furthermore, he has obtained a little or a small touch of wisdom, vision, and bliss, and he praises and clings to himself with that little bit of wisdom, vision, and touch of bliss. When he clings to self, he thinks that that is enough and does not strive further. Thus, clinging to self, this is like this: it has created an obstacle to higher seeing. What is instability? That is, the senses are not subdued, the senses are rough, and the senses have become as high as reeds, thus thinking wrongly, speaking wrongly, and doing wrong actions, and not thinking of the Dharma as stable, not thinking of it as firm. Therefore, higher seeing will not be fully attained and will not be completely purified. Thus, instability is like this: it is an obstacle to higher seeing. There are two obstacles to calm abiding: namely, selflessness and dwelling in a bad place. There are also two obstacles to higher seeing: namely, clinging to self and instability. Whatever is an obstacle to calm abiding and whatever is an obstacle to higher seeing is called an obstacle to correct inner placement. This is a brief summary of the meaning of obstacles. The detailed distinctions are as before, and the meaning of the brief summary and the previous detailed distinctions are combined into one, which is called an obstacle. The opposite of that obstacle, the absence of those obstacles, being separated from, not possessing, and not associating with those obstacles, should be known as the absence of obstacles, which is called the absence of obstacles. What is giving and increasing? In order to obtain the stream of mind, the equipment of mind, the collection of yoga, and the supreme meaning, whatever giving of blameless generosity is given. Regarding that, who gives? To whom is it given? What is given? With what is it given? How is it given? Why is it given? With what
