Connecting, subsequently associating, satisfying, delighting, pleasing, gladdening, not being lazy, a mind of loving-kindness, a mind of benefit, subsequently a mind of compassion, not relying on gain and respect and fame, not praising oneself, not disparaging others, with reason, association, unmixed, endowed with Dharma, speaking in harmony with the retinue. Thus, one is able to teach the Dharma. Whoever possesses these eight branches is one who constantly encourages, reminds, admonishes, subsequently shows, and teaches the Dharma, therefore he is called a virtuous friend. This is a brief explanation of the classification of virtuous friends. What is the concise summary of the meaning? If he is a friendly friend, a beloved one, possessing subsequent compassion, and initially only wishes for benefit and happiness, and that benefit and happiness are also not inverted, and the view is not inverted, but truly knows as it is, just like that, the benefit and happiness themselves are able to be correctly accomplished, possessing the power of approaching and gathering, and being skilled in means, just like that, starting from approaching and gathering benefit and happiness, becoming virtuous and not lazy, able to accomplish, possessing the nature of initiating diligence, then by summarizing with these four causes, one should know that he is a virtuous friend with all complete aspects. This is the concise summary of the meaning of a virtuous friend, the previous extensive classification and the current concise summary of the meaning, that is what is called a virtuous friend. The sixth volume of the Śrāvakabhūmi. What is listening to the true Dharma and contemplating?
