In what way, for the basis of how to examine, in that direction at that time, so much. In that way, one thinks and fully understands in that way. Thinking and fully understanding in that way means that in this very life, there is no fault, no falling, no regret, no remorse, no subsequent sorrow, and in the next life there is no fault, and the body is destroyed. After death, one will not fall into evil destinies and evil paths, and will not be born in the hells of sentient beings, and it will become the cause of the accumulation of obtaining what has not been obtained. This is a brief summary of the meaning of acting with mindfulness. The detailed distinctions are as before, and the meaning of the brief summary is acting with mindfulness. So, what is a virtuous friend? One should know that a virtuous friend is one who is perfect in all aspects through eight causes. What are the eight? For example, here, some people first abide in morality, and are learned, and have discernment, and have compassion, and their minds are completely free from sorrow, and they have patience, and they have fearlessness, and they have the ability of speech. So, how does one abide in morality? As before in detail, abiding in morality, being bound by the vows of individual liberation, desiring the path of a renunciate, desiring the path of a Brahmin, entering in order to tame oneself, to pacify oneself, and to completely liberate oneself from samsara, thus one abides in morality. So, how is one learned? He speaks of the Dharma, which is pure conduct, good in the beginning, good in the middle, good in the end, with good meaning, good words, unmixed, completely perfect, completely pure, completely cleansed, and he speaks of these with words, and he holds well and teaches, recites, thinks with his mind, and fully understands with sight, such is

I am one who brings complete joy, and I am tireless in teaching the Dharma to the four assemblies. I am wise, without laziness, capable of accomplishing, and of a nature that initiates diligence. Thus, the mind will not be completely discouraged. How does one possess patience? Even if scolded, one does not scold back; even if angered, one does not become angry in return; Even if beaten, one does not strike back; even if shortcomings are exposed, one does not expose others' shortcomings. Beating, repeated beating, endurance, binding, imprisonment, defilement, slander, threats, and even the most severe punishments, one considers them to be one's own fault, and follows the ripening of karma. One does not quarrel with others, nor hold grudges. Even if despised, spoken of unpleasantly, or slandered, one does not change, but only thinks of benefiting others. One endures cold, heat, hunger, thirst, mosquitoes, long-beaked flies, wind, sun, the touch of poisonous snakes, and others' evil words. One endures the path of future bad words, and the unbearable suffering of physical labor, harshness, heat, unpleasantness, and life-threatening things. One also endures those who are born to take life, and is of a nature to accept them willingly. Thus, one possesses patience. How does one possess fearlessness? The mind is completely without timidity, there is no trembling voice, and with the confidence of non-forgetfulness, one teaches the Dharma to the assemblies. Fear and the basis of fear do not arise, and sweat does not come from the armpits and pores. Thus, one possesses fearlessness. How does one possess the activity of speech? One is known to the assembly, pleasant and agreeable, clear and distinct, able to be understood, worthy of being listened to, without inconsistency, without dependence, and possesses irrefutable speech. Thus, one possesses the activity of speech, and the speech is virtuous. Because one possesses these eight reasons, one is able to encourage, and to remember.
