That which preserves life, and how to preserve it, thus preserving it, what is that? It refers to conducting oneself with mindfulness regarding the wearing of the monastic robe, Dharma garments, and carrying the alms bowl. Then, what is eating? What is drinking? What is chewing and tasting? What is eating, drinking, chewing, and tasting with mindfulness? Whatever enjoyment of food, whatever it may be, all of those are called eating. It can also be divided into two types: chewing and tasting. Then, what is chewing? For example: dough, oil cakes, rice porridge, warm roasted barley flour, and anything else that has been cooked and transformed into a food form, which can be eaten to sustain life, that is called chewing, which is also eating. Then, what is tasting? For example: milk, yogurt, butter, clarified butter, grain oil, honey, molasses juice, meat, fish meat, dried meat, salt, forest fruits, and any form of food that can be eaten, that is called tasting, which is also eating. The taste of alkali, the taste of sugar, roots, yogurt water, salt, whey, even water, whatever is to be drunk, that is called drinking. If one fully and truly understands eating, drinking, chewing, and tasting from the aspect of their own nature, and also fully and truly understands how to eat, how to drink, how to chew, and how to taste, that is what is called mindfulness. Because one possesses this mindfulness, when eating, drinking, chewing, and tasting, if one is eating, drinking, chewing, and tasting, one fully and truly understands, and from the beginning of eating until tasting, whatever is to be eaten, drunk, chewed, and tasted, and at what time from the beginning of eating until tasting, at that time from the beginning of eating until tasting, and how to eat from the beginning until tasting, one eats in that way.

For example, here some people on a bed, a small bed, or a spread of grass, sit in the lotus position, straighten the body, place mindfulness in front, sitting or being seated, this is called sitting. For example, here some people during the day, completely purify their minds from the dharmas that obscure virtue, such as walking and sitting, and also conduct themselves with mindfulness in the first and last watches of the night, this is called not lying down. For example, here some people diligently follow the practice of not lying down in this way, and uphold the Dharma they have heard, such as the Sutra Pitaka, the Section of Verses, the Section of Prophecies, etc., extensively hear the Dharma previously mentioned, and fully understand, extensively recite, make it familiar by reciting, and also extensively and truthfully proclaim it to others, and together with the virtuous practitioners of pure conduct, or with other householders, for example, for the sake of generating diligence,

That, at times, makes mixed-up speech, speaks of coming, each rejoices individually, that is called speech. Thus, here, if one goes alone to a solitary place, and contemplates the meaning of the dharmas as heard, as fully understood, and as perfectly recited; measures, closely examines, and correctly establishes them within; establishes them only within the mind; gathers and establishes them; correctly establishes them; definitely establishes them; closely establishes them; tames, pacifies, closely pacifies, makes a single continuum, makes samadhi, or practices yoga on vipashyana, that is called non-speech. Thus, here, if one dwells near in the spring season, and when the peak of spring, the hot season arrives, one experiences harm, cessation, and weariness from the heat, and untimely sleepiness, and the very nature of enjoying sleep, that is called sleepiness. If the period of going and dispelling sleepiness is thoroughly known only as correct through its own characteristics, and the period of where to go and where to dispel sleepiness is also thoroughly known only as correct, and the period of when to go and when to dispel sleepiness is also thoroughly known only as correct, and the period of how to go and how to dispel sleepiness is also thoroughly known only as correct, that is called its mindfulness. Possessing that mindfulness, when acting during the period of going and dispelling sleepiness, if one knows only as correct that one is going and dispelling sleepiness, and during the period of where to go and where to dispel sleepiness, one goes there and acts to dispel sleepiness, and when acting during the period of when to go and when to dispel sleepiness, one goes at that time and acts to dispel sleepiness, and how to go and how to dispel sleepiness, thus
