Not abandoning, diligently cultivating virtuous Dharma, constantly and continuously, persevering unremittingly, sleeping on time, not sleeping at inappropriate times, and even when sleeping, falling asleep with a mind free from all afflictions, the mind not being tainted by any afflictions, waking up on time, not exceeding the time of waking up, that is, not sleeping in the upper part of the night and the lower part of the night, the four things that a diligent striver, a person, should truly do are these four. The Blessed One also, starting from these four things, taught the Shravakas to strive without sleeping in the upper part of the night and the lower part of the night. How was it taught? As it is said, during the day, through walking and sitting, the mind is fully engaged from the Dharmas that would obscure it, and in the first watch of the night, also through walking and sitting, the mind is fully purified from the Dharmas that would obscure it. Therefore, for the time being, like this, as long as one does not sleep, one does not abandon the virtuous side, diligently cultivates virtuous Dharma, constantly and continuously, and perseveres unremittingly, this is called the first thing to be truly done. After being completely purified, then coming out of the monastery, washing the feet outside the monastery, entering the monastery, lying down on the right side, placing the feet on top of each other, as it is said, this is like, sleeping on time, not sleeping at inappropriate times, this is called the second thing to be truly done. Sleeping while keeping in mind the perception of light, mindfulness and awareness, and only the thought of waking up, as it is said, this is like, even when sleeping, falling asleep with a mind free from all afflictions, the mind not being tainted by any afflictions, this is called the third thing to be truly done. Then, in the last watch of the night, also quickly waking up, and through walking and sitting, fully engaging the mind from the Dharmas that would obscure it, as it is said, this is like, time

Awakening at the right time and not exceeding the time of awakening, thus the fourth thing to be done is taught. Among them, what is said about sleeping while attending to the perception of light, mindfulness, and awareness, and only attending to the perception of awakening, is that one can fall asleep with a mind free from afflictions through two causes, namely mindfulness and awareness. Also, one can awaken at the right time and not exceed the time of awakening through two causes, namely attending to the perception of light and the perception of awakening. How so? Among them, mindfulness is to sleep while fully grasping a virtuous object, and awareness is to quickly and accurately know when one has fallen away from that virtuous object and the mind has become defiled by afflictions. Thus, one can sleep with a mind free from afflictions through those two causes. Among them, attending to the perception of light and only the perception of awakening is to prevent falling into a deep sleep and to prevent being entangled in that sleep for a long time. Thus, through those two causes, one can awaken at the right time and not exceed the time of awakening. This is a brief summary of the meaning of striving not to sleep during the first and last parts of the night. The detailed distinctions are those mentioned earlier, and this brief summary is what is called striving not to sleep during the first and last parts of the night. Sravakabhumi, Fifth fascicle. What is acting with awareness? It is said that here, some people act with awareness when walking and returning, and when looking slightly and looking fully, contracting and extending, wearing the monastic skirt and Dharma robes, holding the alms bowl, eating, drinking, chewing, tasting, going, staying, sitting, sleeping, not sleeping, speaking, not speaking, and dispelling drowsiness, they also act with awareness. Among them, what is walking? What is returning? Acting with awareness when walking and returning

Who are you? Then, going is like this: here, some people go to a village, or another village, a house, or another house, a temple, or another temple. Then, returning is like this: here, some people return from a village, or another village, a house, or another house, a temple, or another temple. Then, acting with mindfulness means that in whatever way one goes, one truly and completely knows, "I will go," and when returning, one also truly and completely knows, "I will return," and one truly and completely knows, "I should go here, I should not go here," and one truly and completely knows, "This is the time I should go, this is not the time I should go," and one truly and completely knows, "When I go, I should go like this, I should not go like this," this is called mindfulness. Possessing this mindfulness, if one goes, one truly and completely knows, "I will go," and goes to the place one should go, goes at the appropriate time, and does not go at the inappropriate time, and by examining the sphere of action, the action, the rituals, and the demeanor of how to go, one acts in that way, this is called acting with mindfulness. Then, going and returning to the places previously fully shown, without applying intelligence beforehand, without exerting effort beforehand, without desiring beforehand, in short, whatever forms are seen by the eye, this is called slightly looking. When going and returning to those places, applying intelligence beforehand, exerting effort beforehand, desiring beforehand, the eye sees, for example, kings, or great ministers, or the people of towns, or the people of regions, or Brahmins, or householders, or rich people, or merchants, or captains, or other external houses besides those, or pavilions, or dwellings, or mansions, or the tops of trees, or other various forms of the world, this is called truly looking.
