So! How does one fall asleep with the perception of light? That is, one holds the characteristic of light well and very firmly, attends to it well, cultivates it well, and individually examines it well. While attending to that very light, one falls asleep with a mind that possesses light. Therefore, even if one falls asleep, the mind will not become darkness. Thus, one falls asleep with the perception of light. How does one fall asleep with mindfulness? That is, the mindfulness that arises from the causes of listening to, contemplating, and meditating on virtuous and meaningful Dharma will follow until one falls asleep. Therefore, even if one falls asleep, one will clearly speak those Dharmas as if one has not fallen asleep, and the mind will repeatedly follow those very Dharmas. Thus, how does one fall asleep with mindfulness? Whether it is a virtuous mind or an unspecified mind, one falls asleep with mindfulness in the same way. Thus, one falls asleep with mindfulness. How does one fall asleep with awareness? Thus, one becomes mindful. When one is about to fall asleep, if any of the near afflictions cause the mind to be completely defiled, then one thoroughly knows that the arisen defilement is completely evil, and one no longer accepts it, makes it empty, examines it, and turns the mind away. Therefore, it is called falling asleep with awareness. How does one not fall asleep while attending to the thought of only getting up? That is, one makes the mind completely seized by diligence, and falls asleep quickly, quickly, with small steps. For example, like a mountain deer in a secluded place, in every way and in all circumstances, one does not let the mind indulge in the oppression of sleep, does not fall into it, does not fall into it. Furthermore, one thinks like this: Emaho! How wonderful! I should accomplish the non-sleeping that is permitted by the Buddha in every way and in all circumstances. Having thought like this, in order to accomplish this, one will generate great effort and corresponding diligent practice, and abide in it. Furthermore, one thinks like this: How can I, in order to dispel non-sleeping and cultivate virtuous Dharmas,

The land is without laziness, and those who are able to practice initiate diligence and abide, thinking that they will be able to practice again when tomorrow dawns, and thus extensively generate diligence and abide. Among these, with the thought of arising, one will not sleep deeply, and therefore, when it is time to arise, one will be able to arise quickly and awaken without missing the time. With the second thought of arising, one will sleep exactly like the lion's sleeping posture allowed by the Buddha, neither more nor less. With the third thought of arising, the aspiration will not be interrupted. Because of forgetting, one strives diligently to practice correctly from above to above. Thus, one sleeps while thinking only of the thought of arising. In the last period of the night, one also awakens quickly, and from the dharmas that are obscured by walking and sitting, one purifies one's mind. The last period of the night is the time from dawn, with one 'mel-tse' (a Tibetan unit of time) period remaining. That is to say, while keeping in mind the thought of luminosity, mindfulness, awareness, and only the thought of arising, one sacrifices one 'mel-tse' period of time for sleep in the middle of the night, and when one arises, one will be overwhelmed by the great power of drowsiness and sleep. Therefore, when one arises, one will not be dull, timid, lazy, or negligent, and when one arises, the body will become capable. If there is no dullness, timidity, laziness, or negligence, one will arise quickly simply by striving. Purifying one's mind from the dharmas that are obscured by walking and sitting should be understood as before. This is temporarily a detailed classification of the effort to practice without sleeping in the upper and lower parts of the night. In short, for this, the person (Pudgala) who strives to practice without sleeping in the upper and lower parts of the night should correctly do four things. What are the four things? As long as one does not sleep, one should engage in virtuous deeds.
