And, dullness and sleep, regret and agitation, doubt and suffering itself, the cause of anger, darkness, relatives, regions, the discrimination of the aspect of immortality, past laughter, play, joy, memories of indulging in pleasure, the three times, and the non-virtuous dharmas belonging to the three times, wherever the mind is. How does desire completely purify the mind from these, and from how much does it purify? That is, it purifies from dullness and sleep, and from the obscurations that induce dullness and sleep. Therefore, one should well, extremely, and very firmly grasp the sign of appearance, well attend to it, well rely on it, and well individually examine it. When one is covered with a mind that possesses appearance and light, or with desire that is without cover, at the time of desire, like this, remembering the Buddha, or the Dharma, or the Sangha, or morality, or generosity, or the deities, becoming any object of focus that is the first, one completely tames the mind, settles it, uplifts it, and makes it extremely joyful. Or, one shows the faults of the dharmas that will definitely lead to sleep and dullness, like this, the Sutra section, the section of verses, the section of prophecies, the section of stanzas, the section of self-utterances, the section of narratives, the section of parables, the section of such occurrences, the section of Jataka tales, the extensive section, the section of wondrous dharmas, and the section of definitive teachings, whatever has been heard, held, and taught, from among these, in various ways, one censures dullness and sleep, enumerates faults, praises and extols abandoning dullness and sleep, these are widely recited, or truthfully explained to others, or one thinks about the meaning, measures and distinguishes, or one looks in various directions, or one focuses on observing the moon, stars, planets, constellations, etc., or one washes one's face with water. Therefore, that which is not born, being completely enveloped by his dullness and sleep, is

It does not arise, and what has arisen will be extinguished, so that one can completely practice away from those dharmas that cause obstacles. So, for which dharmas that cause obstacles through suffering should one completely subdue one's mind? And how should one subdue them? The answer is that one should completely subdue the four dharmas that cause obstacles, namely, desire for sensual pleasures, malice, excitement, regret, and doubt, as well as those dharmas that lead to these. In order to make manifest the desire for sensual pleasures that has already arisen, and to keep away what has not yet arisen, one should sit in the lotus position, straighten the body, fix mindfulness in one direction, and abide in contemplating any beautiful sign of samadhi, such as rottenness, swelling, pus, bruising, eating, blood-smeared, scattered, skeleton, white bone, or bone lock. Or, in order to abandon attachment or craving for sensual pleasures, one should do as follows: hear, hold, and teach the sutra section, the section of verses, the section of prophecies, etc., or speak extensively as before, or recite, or think with the mind, or understand deeply through observation, and from these different aspects, condemn, criticize, and denounce attachment, craving, clinging, infatuation, and special attachment to sensual pleasures, and praise, commend, and highly praise the dharma of abandoning attachment and craving for sensual pleasures. By attending to it in this way, one will not generate unarisen craving for sensual pleasures, and one will be freed from arisen craving for sensual pleasures. Furthermore, with regard to malice, there is this difference: abiding in such a state of mind that is only loving, without hostility, without harm, vast, broad, non-dual, immeasurable, inclining to one direction through diligent practice, universally practicing and abiding.
