Therefore, it transforms, and thus his mind quickly becomes calm, he breathes in and out easily, and he is not completely entangled by sleep and drowsiness. Therefore, he has the capacity and power to quickly attain what has not been attained, understand what has not been understood, and realize what has not been realized. Thus, one eats food in order to benefit the Brahmachari. How does one eat food in order to abandon old feelings? For example, in the past, he ate food that was not in moderation, unsuitable, or undigested. Therefore, various kinds of bodily diseases appeared on his body, such as itching, leprosy, boils, vitiligo, and so on, as previously described in detail. And, bodily feelings arising from the causes of those diseases, unbearable suffering, roughness, heat, and unpleasant feelings arose. Therefore, in order to pacify those diseases, and in order to pacify the painful feelings arising from the causes of those diseases, he relies separately on various medicines that are beneficial, harmonious, suitable, and compliant as indicated by the doctor, and also eats suitable foods. Therefore, his diseases, and the arising of painful feelings arising from their causes, will be abandoned. Thus, one eats food in order to abandon old feelings. How does one eat food in order to prevent new feelings from arising? When he is now healthy, without disease, and full of strength, if he does not understand the moderation of food, or it is unsuitable, or undigested, then in the future, tomorrow or the day after, swelling will not appear on his body, or any disease inside the body, such as itching, boils, leprosy, vitiligo, and so on, as previously described in detail. And, bodily feelings arising from the causes of those diseases, like those previous feelings, will not arise on the body. Thus, one eats food in order to prevent new feelings from arising. How does one eat food in order to nourish oneself, have strength, happiness, be without other faults, and also abide in the touch of happiness?

If that is the case, then what one eats temporarily to sustain life, that is life. What eliminates hunger and weakness, that is its strength. What abandons old feelings and prevents new ones from arising, that is its happiness. Having taken alms righteously according to the Dharma, enjoying it without attachment or obsession, as previously stated, that is its blamelessness. After eating, as previously stated, the body does not become heavy or sluggish, but is capable of functioning and able to endure hunger and thirst, that is abiding in its happiness. Therefore, one should eat with proper attention, not for play, not for obesity, not for coquetry, not for adornment, etc., as previously stated. This is a detailed classification of the knowledge of the measure of food. What is the concise summary of the essential point? It is said: What one enjoys and how one enjoys it, that is the concise summary of the essential point. So, what does one enjoy? For example, a mouthful of food, dough, oil cake, rice, tsampa, etc., as previously explained in detail. How does one enjoy it? One should eat with proper attention, not for play, not for obesity, not for coquetry, not for adornment, etc., as previously explained. Another concise summary of the essential point is that it is taken with the antidote, abandoning the extreme of desire, abandoning the extreme of self-fatigue, and enjoying it for the benefit of pure conduct. How is it taken with the antidote? It is what is said, "eating with proper attention." How is it abandoning the extreme of desire? It is what is said, "not for play, not for obesity, not for coquetry, not for adornment." How is it abandoning the extreme of self-fatigue?

If one abandons, (it is) to eliminate hunger, to abandon old feelings, to prevent new feelings from arising, to live and have strength, And also to become happy, as it is said. If one enjoys for the benefit of celibacy, how is that? For the benefit of celibacy, one is without fault, and will also abide in happiness, as it is said. Furthermore, the essence is summarized, there are two types: without food and with food. Among them, without food means not enjoying even a little in all ways and in everything, and if one does not enjoy, one will die. Among them, there are two types of food: appropriate food and inappropriate food. Among them, appropriate food is that which is not too little, not too much, not completely digested, not incompatible, and not the cause of all afflictions. Among them, inappropriate food is that which is too little, too much, not completely digested, incompatible, and enjoying that which is the cause of all afflictions. Among them, appropriate food that is not too little does not cause hunger and weakness that have not arisen to arise, and causes what has arisen to be abandoned. Among them, appropriate food that is not too much, as mentioned before, will not cause the body to become heavy and uncomfortable, and difficult to abandon. Among them, appropriate food that is completely digested and compatible will abandon old feelings and prevent new feelings from arising, so that one will live and have strength and happiness. Among them, appropriate food that is not the cause of all afflictions will become without fault and abide in happiness. Among them, inappropriate food that is too little will keep one alive, but will also cause hunger and weakness. Among them, inappropriate food that is too much will make his body like carrying a heavy burden, and the food cannot be completely digested on time. Among them, inappropriate food that is not completely digested will cause his body to swell, and bodily diseases will also arise in the body.
