To do. Merit. Fully endowed with color, fully endowed with fragrance, many foods fully endowed with taste are eaten as much as possible with the heat of cooking. If one eats to satisfaction, one will become powerful when the next day dawns, like this: one can draw a bow, massage the body, lift stones, shake, dig the ground, exceed strength, bend the legs, run, win, jump, and do discus throwing exercises. Relying on those exercises, one can become powerful, the body becomes very strong, one will be free from diseases for a long time, our youth will last long, unpleasant aging will not quickly overwhelm the body, one will live very long, even if one eats a lot, one will become very strong, and the food eaten will be well and completely digested, and it will also eliminate various faults. Eating for that purpose is for being fat without disease, for being fat with youth, and for being fat for the sake of living. Those people also think like this: we have finished exercising, let us perform the bathing ritual, like this: wash the hands with clean water, wash the body, and also arrange the hair. Anoint the body with various ointments, and adorn the body with various clothes, various garlands, and various ornaments, so they think. Among them, bathing, arranging, and anointing are the beauty of those. Those who have become beautiful like that, holding clothes, garlands, and ornaments, that is called adornment, like that it is for the purpose of beauty and the purpose of adornment that one eats. Those people become fat like that because of fatness, become beautiful, the body and speech are adorned, and when it is warm or in the evening, when it is time to eat, they feel thirsty and hungry, very happy, very eager, very joyful, not regarding it as a fault, and not really understanding what will definitely happen, like this: again and again for the purpose of discriminating thoughts, for the purpose of fatness, for the purpose of beauty, for the purpose of adornment.

They eat whatever food they can get. The noble Śrāvakas, endowed with learning, endowed with the power of discernment, knowing well the faults and determined to renounce, although they enjoy, they do not enjoy those enjoyments as they desire, but think: 'This food should be abandoned by me because of partaking of it; it will be abandoned only by partaking of it.' The saying, 'For the sake of maintaining this body,' means that if one eats, one will live, and if one does not eat, one will not live; and what is called living is the continuation of that body. Thinking, 'If I eat this food, I will live and not die,' one eats food. Therefore, it is said, 'For the sake of maintaining this body.' How does one eat food for the sake of living? There are two ways of living: there is living through difficulty, and there is living without difficulty. What is living through difficulty? It is when one eats a certain kind of food and feels hunger, weakness, harm, suffering, or the illness worsens, or one begs alms in an unlawful way, or it is unlawful, or there is attachment, or infatuation, or indulgence, or bondage, entanglement, fainting, excessive attachment, or enjoyment due to excessive attachment, or the body is heavy and unable to work, or it is difficult to abandon, and therefore his mind becomes dull and unable to be calm, or he breathes heavily, or exhales, or drowsiness and sleep entangle his mind; this is called living through difficulty. What is living without difficulty? For example, when one eats a certain kind of food and does not feel hunger, weakness, harm, suffering, or the illness does not worsen, and one seeks alms in a lawful way, or it is lawful, or there is no attachment, or no infatuation, or no indulgence, or no bondage, entanglement, fainting, no excessive attachment, or no enjoyment due to excessive attachment, or his body is not heavy and able to work, or it is easy to abandon, and therefore his mind quickly beco

Or placing, or breathing for a short time, or exhaling, or not being entangled in the mind by dullness and sleep, this is called living without difficulty. Among them, living with difficulty enables the body's life to survive, and it is sinful and possesses all pervasive afflictions. Among them, living without difficulty also enables the body's life to survive, and it is without sin and without all pervasive afflictions. Among them, the noble hearer who possesses hearing completely abandons living with sin and possessing all pervasive afflictions, and takes living without sin and without all pervasive afflictions and relies on them separately, therefore it is said that it is for the sake of living. How is the aforementioned living without sin and without all pervasive afflictions done? It is said in reply: It is for the sake of eliminating hunger and benefiting the Brahmacarya, and for the sake of abandoning old feelings and for the sake of not generating new feelings, and thinking that I am alive, have strength and happiness, and also abide in the touch of sinlessness and happiness, so it is said. When relying on each other in this way, it is to make living without sin and without all pervasive afflictions. Among them, how does one eat in order to eliminate hunger? Whenever it is time to eat and one becomes hungry, one eats in order to eliminate the all pervasive entanglement of hunger, restlessness and weakness. And how does one eat? Just like at the time of flour paste, or when night falls, or until the time for eating tomorrow has not arrived, one eats to the extent that it does not harm it due to untimely hunger and weakness, so it is eating in order to eliminate hunger. How does one eat in order to benefit the Brahmacarya? One eats such food and eats in moderation, thereby striving in the direction of virtue, at the time of just finishing eating, or on that day the body is not heavy, capable and easy to abandon.
