It is just as stated in the scriptures. Sometimes, it is also said to mean adornment, as it is said in the scriptures: "A monk and a nun who possess the adornment of discipline will abandon evil and cultivate virtue." Sometimes, it is also said to mean anointment, as it is said in the scriptures: "A monk and a nun who possess the anointment of discipline are the same as before." Sometimes, it is also said to mean the state of fragrance, as it is said in the scriptures: "Ananda, if there is a state of fragrance, then its scent will waft with the wind. Its scent will waft to non-wind directions, wind directions, and non-wind directions." Sometimes, it is also said to mean good conduct, as it is said in the scriptures: "Good conduct of the body is desiring to ripen in this life and the next; good conduct of speech is also the same." Sometimes, it is also said to mean discipline, as it is said in the scriptures: "Givers and patrons, possessing discipline, abiding in discipline, looking to the future, will see and hear the fruits spoken of in the scriptures." Furthermore, abiding in possessing discipline is bound by the discipline of individual liberation. Why did the Bhagavan say that discipline is the fundamental meaning? The fundamental meaning is the meaning of foundation and the meaning of reliance. That is, discipline is the basis and reliance for all worldly and transworldly qualities that are without fault, that lead to the supreme, principal, sacred, and blissful, and that cause all to arise and be obtained. Therefore, it is also said to mean the root. For example, just as the earth is the basis and reliance for the growth of grass, shrubs, medicines, and forests, so too should discipline be extensively explained as mentioned before. Why is discipline said to be the meaning of adornment? It is said that those other adornments, such as necklaces, bracelets, armlets, rings, or gold and silver chain adornments, no matter how much they are for young children

If those (ornaments) are put on someone who is suitable, it will only appear beautiful for a while. If those ornaments are put on an old person of eighty or ninety years old, with fallen teeth and white hair, it is not like that; instead, it becomes like mocking them. For those who are weakened by illness, weakened by enjoyment, or weakened by loved ones, it is not beautiful either. Because morality is beautiful at all times, it is also called an ornament. Why is morality called anointment? Because having properly taken the morality that is virtuous and without fault, just as applying sandalwood oil or camphor oil to someone oppressed by heat in the very hot season of spring, it completely eliminates all the suffering of body and mind arising from not keeping the precepts. Therefore, morality is called anointment. Why is morality called the form of incense? Because the person who possesses morality, like various root incenses, heart incenses, or flower incenses being moved by the wind, emitting pleasant fragrances in all directions, various sounds of goodness, beauty, praise, and fame spread in all directions. Therefore, morality is also called the form of incense. Why is morality called good conduct? Because practice leads to happiness, practice leads to the heavens, and leads to good rebirths, it is called good conduct. Why is morality called protection? Because the Dharma has the nature of cessation, has the characteristic of cessation, and has the nature of abandonment, it is also called protection. The third volume of the *Śrāvakabhūmi*. In order to purify the protection of morality completely, it is necessary to separately observe three aspects. What are the three? Namely: separately observing the actions of the body, separately observing the actions of speech, and the actions of the mind.

This is separate discernment. How does one separately discern those actions? How does one completely purify the vows of discipline? For any action that is contemplated, if one intends to put it into physical action, one should think like this: Will this physical action of mine harm myself and others, becoming unwholesome, thereby causing suffering and maturing into suffering? Or will this physical action of mine not harm myself and others, be wholesome, thereby causing happiness and maturing into happiness? Thus, one should engage in separate discernment. When one discerns separately in this way, if one knows that one's physical action will harm oneself and others, is unwholesome, will cause suffering, and mature into suffering, one should turn back from it, not do it, and not follow it. When one discerns separately in this way, if one knows, as before, that one's physical action will not cause harm and is wholesome, one should do it with the body, not turn back, and follow it. Therefore, relying on past time, for any physical action that has been done, one should repeatedly discern like this: Will my physical action cause harm? When one discerns separately in this way, if one knows, as before, that one's physical action has caused harm, one should confess separately before the wise who practice in accordance with Brahma, and repent according to the Dharma. When one discerns separately in this way, if one knows, as before, that one's physical action has not caused harm, one should follow and abide in it day and night with joy and great joy. Therefore, just like this, for physical actions that occur in the past, future, and present times, one should engage in separate discernment.
