Possessing rituals that contradict the Vinaya as previously described, it is thus completely controlled by the deterioration of rituals. If asked, how is it completely controlled by the deterioration of livelihood? It is like this: some here are extremely greedy, do not know the rituals, are difficult to support, and have a nature that is difficult to satisfy. For them, it is not Dharma, but they completely seek Dharma robes; it is not Dharma, and not Dharma, that they completely seek alms and bedding, cushions, medicine for illness, and utensils; it is not Dharma. For the sake of Dharma robes and alms, bedding, cushions, medicine for illness, and utensils, in order to show that they possess virtues, their behavior is not their true nature. They practice elsewhere, and to others, they show that they are not of coarse faculties, not of wavering faculties, but of peaceful faculties. Therefore, knowing that they possess virtues, others also think like this: they should give Dharma robes, alms, bedding, cushions, medicine for illness, and utensils. And they are annoying, garrulous, very rude, sweet-talking, and proclaim their names and lineages. Or, if they become learned and uphold the Dharma, solely for the sake of gain, they proclaim to others the Dharma spoken by the Hearers or by the Buddha, or they recite themselves, either truthfully or slightly exaggerating their own virtues, or they cause others to recite, and they show with other signs, and they desire Dharma robes, or many mendicant's utensils, and any good things. Even without lacking, they show tattered Dharma robes in order to make the Brahmins and faithful householders know that I lack Dharma robes, and thus give or make many and good Dharma robes. It is the same for Dharma robes as it is for any of the mendicant's living utensils. If they do not obtain as desired from the Brahmins and faithful householders, and if they do not obtain as desired from having no enjoyment and no possessions, they also strongly...

measuring by gain, begging while scolding, even if one obtains something bad from those who have wealth, one does not praise what is obtained but rather curses it. In front of the donor and the almsgiver, one says this: 'Alas, some sons of good families are more lowly and very poor than you, and there are also some sons and daughters of good families who also give such abundant and satisfying things. You are of higher lineage and very wealthy than them, why do you give such unsatisfactory and inferior things?' One also says this. In these ways, pretending, flattering, persuading, and measuring by gain, relying on wanting to gain through gain, seeking robes, food, bedding, cushions, medicine for diseases, and utensils from others, this is seeking in an unlawful way, not in the way of the Dharma. Whatever is not in the way of the Dharma is seeking in a way contrary to the Dharma. Thus, discipline is completely seized by a deteriorated livelihood. How does one fall into two extremes? Like this, some here pursue food of desire, whether through Dharma or unlawful means, the robes, food, bedding, cushions, medicine for diseases, and utensils obtained from others, they are particularly attached to and completely enjoy, not regarding it as a fault, and not understanding thorough renunciation, this is called one extreme. Furthermore, some here pursue self-torment, tormenting and completely tormenting themselves in various ways, and also truly accepting severe asceticism, such as sleeping in thorns, sleeping in ashes, leaning on a stake, sleeping on a grass mat, or squatting, pursuing squatting as the practice of abandonment, or completely using fire, even using fire completely three times, or jumping into water.

causing them to be immersed in water, even immersing them three times. Or standing on one foot, completely turning to face the side where the sun is. Striving to exhaust oneself through such means is called the second extreme. In this way, one falls into two extremes. How is it not definitive? For example, some people believe that only through this discipline or asceticism can purity, liberation, and certainty be attained. They highly regard the view of discipline or asceticism. All the disciplines of outsiders (referring to religions other than Buddhism) are very carefully guarded with such purity, and although very pure, they are still not definitive. Thus, this is non-definitiveness. How is it that what has been rightly undertaken is completely lost? For example, some people are completely shameless in every way and do not respect monks. They are immoral, have sinful natures, are inwardly rotten, have become faulty, are like rotten wood, behave like eunuchs, claim to be monks but are not, and claim to be celibate but are not. In this way, what has been rightly undertaken is completely lost. These ten causes lead to the loss of discipline. The Blessed One said that this is the loss of discipline. The Blessed One also said that this is the decline of discipline. Regarding these causes, one should understand through two causes what is non-definitiveness and what is the rightly undertaken that has not been completely lost. For other causes, it should be understood as merely the loss of discipline. From the exposition of the various causes of the black side, one can understand conversely the causes of the white side, which are the perfection of discipline and the complete purity of discipline. The Blessed One sometimes spoke of discipline as the root meaning. The root is very firm, delighting in a peaceful mind, having noble views and sinful views, one should possess and abandon. The verse says:
