Cessation is peace, and one discerns that the path of abandoning it is definitely renunciation. Here, whatever is the true praise for the aggregates of oneself that have not disappeared, and whatever is known through inference for the aggregates of different kinds that have disappeared, that is like the seed for the arising of the knowledge of the Dharma and subsequent knowledge. One should also understand that the individual discernment of characteristics, the attention, is also mixed with hearing and thinking. The yogi, through the cause of such careful examination, when, in this way, through the reasoning of establishing validity, that is, starting from how many truths exist and how they exist, through those sixteen aspects, when one obtains certainty about the four noble truths, then one has truly transcended the attention arising from hearing and thinking and being mixed, and one believes in the aspect of single-pointed meditation. That is the attention arising from his belief, which is focused on the truth and is single-pointed samadhi. Through the cause of constantly relying on that, by the power of the truth of suffering and the truth of the origin of suffering, one will obtain infinite wisdom, and he will believe that impermanence is impermanence, that is, infinite impermanence. Likewise, he believes in infinite suffering, infinite emptiness, infinite selflessness, infinite all afflictions, infinite misconduct, infinite evil destinies, infinite decline of prosperity, infinite birth, old age, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, distress, and disturbance. What is called infinite is that in samsara, these dharmas of samsara are endless and limitless. As long as samsara exists, these dharmas will also arise, and if samsara is completely exhausted, they will also be exhausted, otherwise they will not be exhausted. Thus, existence, going, death, and birth.

Regarding everything, when one believes and understands through the aspects of non-aspiration, non-reliance, and incompatibility, one cultivates the mental activity arising from belief. Therefore, in this way, having made the mind weary and fearful of all existence, becoming, death, and birth, one directs the mind towards Nirvana with superior intention, in any aspect whatsoever. However, that mind of his has long been fond of forms, sounds, smells, tastes, and tactile objects, and has been accumulated and closely associated with forms, sounds, smells, tastes, and tactile objects. Therefore, even if one directs the mind towards Nirvana with superior intention, it does not desire the very nature of peace and is completely tormented, so the mind does not enter, does not begin, does not abide, does not believe, and the mind turns back. Therefore, he makes the mind repeatedly weary and fearful of the truth of suffering and the truth of the origin. Even after having made it weary and fearful, he repeatedly directs the mind towards Nirvana with superior intention, but still, it does not enter. Why is that? It is like this: because there is something that obstructs the realization, I will wander in samsara. I will completely be liberated from samsara. In order for me to be completely liberated from samsara, I should cultivate virtuous dharmas. I should see suffering from the perspective of suffering. See the origin from the perspective of the origin, see the cessation from the perspective of cessation, and see the path from the perspective of the path. I should see emptiness from the perspective of emptiness, see non-aspiration from the perspective of non-aspiration, and see signlessness from the perspective of signlessness. Because one has the gross pride of thinking, "These dharmas are mine," and follows after mental activity, it obstructs and contaminates, and therefore cannot enter. Because of that cause and that condition, even if one directs the mind towards Nirvana with superior intention, his mind will not enter. Therefore, the very pride of thinking "I am" is what obstructs.
