Even if very great (afflictions) arise, just by striving, those afflictions will not disappear faster and faster. Likewise, one will not go to the lower realms, one will not intentionally transgress the precepts, one will not kill the lives of sentient beings born as animals, one will not abandon the precepts and indulge in negligence, it is impossible to commit the five heinous crimes, one will not deny the happiness and suffering caused by oneself, one will not deny the happiness and suffering caused by others, one will not deny the happiness and suffering caused by oneself and others, and one will not deny that happiness and suffering arise without a cause. One will not seek other non-Buddhist teachers from here, one will not seek other places of offering, one will not look to or completely contemplate other virtuous practitioners and Brahmins, one will see the Dharma, one will attain the Dharma, one will understand the Dharma, one will find the depths of the Dharma, one will transcend hesitation, one will transcend doubt, one will not rely on others, one will not be deceived by others, one will only attain fearlessness towards the doctrines of the Teacher's teachings. That is the sign of purity, one does not wish to purify through pure auspiciousness, one will not manifest the eighth existence, and one possesses the four confidences after knowing. Among the excellences of worldly dharmas, that is the mental engagement arising from its aspiration. For those who have abandoned the afflictions to be abandoned by seeing, having realized the truths, that is the mental engagement of extreme solitude. Before that, in order to abandon the afflictions, through habituating and mastering how to attain the path, in order to abandon the great and middling afflictions that operate in the desire realm, one will return once. Those signs, one should know that all those signs are the signs of those who have entered the stream. The difference there is this: even if one engages in objects that correspond to the great entanglement of afflictions, the entanglement of afflictions will arise slowly and be quickly abandoned.

And, having come to this world once, suffering is brought to an end. The signs of not returning and returning are just those previously mentioned. Regarding this, for all the paths of meditation, through the contemplation of discernment, examine separately what has been abandoned and what has not been abandoned, and having examined separately, distinguish them by becoming accustomed to how the path is obtained. So, what is the nature of meditation? What is the function? What is the classification? Through the contemplation of the ground of equipoise of the mundane and supramundane, becoming accustomed to virtuous dharmas that are conditioned, becoming completely familiar, constantly engaging, respectfully engaging, the meditation that arises from these, placing it in the mind stream, all of these are called the nature of meditation. So, the function of meditation is eightfold: meditation causes some dharmas to be obtained, meditation causes some dharmas to rely, some dharmas are purified, some dharmas are eliminated, some dharmas are completely understood, some dharmas are abandoned, some dharmas are made manifest, and some dharmas are made distant. Among these, for the time being, those special virtuous dharmas that have not been obtained are caused to be obtained. Those that have been obtained and have become manifest are caused to rely. Among these, those that have not been obtained and have not become manifest, then dharmas of the same kind as these, through the teachings that have been spoken, later, when they become manifest, cause very pure and very mature things to arise. Among these, the afflicted dharmas that arise universally due to forgetfulness, through the power of becoming accustomed to virtuous dharmas, do not accept and abandon, eliminate, and mature. Among these, for those dharmas that should be abandoned and have not arisen, completely understand them like a disease and detest them, like a tumor, like a sting, like sin, like impermanence, like suffering, like emptiness, like selflessness, completely understand them and detest them. Having completely understood and become accustomed to this, abandon afflictions.
