Therefore, the uninterrupted path arises, and by it, defeats (afflictions). Because of defeating, liberation is directly realized. Just as the higher grounds are suppressed, so too, until the very end, the abandoned qualities of the lower grounds are made distant. This should be understood as the eightfold activity of meditation. Furthermore, it should be known that there are eleven divisions of meditation, namely: meditative quiescence, higher insight meditation, worldly path meditation, transcendental path meditation, small path meditation, intermediate path meditation, great path meditation, application path meditation, uninterrupted path meditation, liberation path meditation, and distinguished path meditation. Among these, meditative quiescence is: the nine states of mind, as before. Higher insight meditation is also just as before. Among these, worldly path meditation is: regarding the lower grounds as coarse and the higher grounds as peaceful, whatever becomes free from desire up to the realm of nothingness. Among these, transcendental path meditation is: contemplating suffering as suffering, and contemplating the boundaries of the path as the path, the undefiled path of right view, etc., whatever becomes free from desire up to the realm of neither existence nor non-existence. Among these, small path meditation is: that which eliminates coarse and great afflictions. Among these, intermediate path meditation is: that which eliminates intermediate afflictions. Among these, great path meditation is: that which eliminates the subtle aspects of afflictions that are to be eliminated last of all. Among these, application path meditation is: that which initiates application for the sake of eliminating afflictions. Among these, uninterrupted path meditation is: that which eliminates afflictions. Among these, liberation path meditation is: that which directly realizes liberation immediately after eliminating afflictions. Among these, distinguished path meditation is: that which initiates the application of another ground before it.

Not attending in the middle, and not attending at the end, this should be known as the eleven categories of meditation. Thus, when striving in meditation, one fully examines the afflictions that have been abandoned and those that have not been abandoned, and at all times the mind becomes disgusted with all things that cause disgust, and at all times the mind becomes delighted with all things that cause delight, this is the attention that gathers delight. By constantly cultivating and familiarizing oneself with that attention that gathers delight, and by repeatedly practicing it, in order to abandon all the afflictions that should be abandoned by meditation, at the very end of everything, a vajra-like samadhi of learning will arise, and because it arises, it will abandon all the afflictions that should be abandoned by meditation. Why is it called vajra-like samadhi? For example, the vajra is superior and principal among all other jewels, such as pearls, lapis lazuli, precious shankha-shells, coral, and so on, it is harder than all, and more stable than all, and it pierces through all others, and is not pierced by other jewels, similarly, this samadhi is also superior and principal among all samadhis of learning, it is harder than all, and more stable than all, and it subdues all afflictions, and cannot be subdued by other afflictions, therefore it is called vajra-like samadhi. As soon as the vajra-like samadhi arises, immediately because it has completely destroyed all the seeds of evil destinies that have turned to the side of afflictions, one obtains a mind that is extremely liberated, one obtains a lineage that is completely purified, and for those whose afflictions have been exhausted, there arises the knowledge that they have been exhausted, and because the cause has been exhausted, thereafter, in all of everything, suffering will not arise again, therefore there will also arise the knowledge that it will not arise. At that time, he is an Arhat, one whose outflows are exhausted, one who has done what was to be done, one who has accomplished what was to be accomplished, one who has abandoned the burden, one who has attained his own benefit, one who has

The complete cessation of all afflictions, the mind being completely liberated by correct wisdom, these ten non-learning dharmas are: non-learning right view, non-learning right thought, non-learning right speech, non-learning right action, non-learning right livelihood, non-learning right effort, non-learning right mindfulness, non-learning right concentration, non-learning right liberation, and possessing right knowledge. For example, with regard to abiding and attention, one is able to control them with one's own mind, and one abides in whatever way the noble ones, gods, or Brahma wish to abide, and one attends to whatever worldly and transworldly virtuous and meaningful dharmas one wishes to attend to. The so-called abiding of the noble ones is abiding in emptiness, signlessness, wishlessness, and cessation. The so-called abiding of the gods is abiding in meditation and formless absorption. The so-called abiding of Brahma is abiding in loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity. This is the ultimate, the most immaculate, the most perfect pure conduct, without bondage, breaking through the abyss, transcending the abyss, destroying the wooden fence, the noble one, subduing the victory banner, abandoning the five branches, possessing the six branches, abiding in the foundation, bestowing the individual truths, abandoning seeking, the immaculate right thought, the bodily activity being extremely subdued, the mind being extremely liberated, the wisdom being extremely liberated, unmixed, possessing intimacy, called the unsurpassed person. These six ways of dwelling in bliss are: when the eye sees forms, the mind does not become happy, nor does the mind become unhappy, but abides in equanimity, mindfulness, and awareness. Similarly, when the ear hears sounds, the nose smells scents, the tongue tastes flavors, the body feels touches, and the mind cognizes dharmas, the mind does not become happy, nor does the mind become unhappy, but abides in equanimity.
