Appearing as stained, similarly, various kinds of ornaments sometimes appear beautifully adorned, and sometimes appear unadorned. Sometimes they appear sturdy, and sometimes they appear broken, cracked, and completely exhausted. Likewise, laughter, song, dance, and the harmonious sounds of musical instruments, arising from various delightful combinations, sometimes appear abundant, and sometimes appear decaying. Similarly, incense, garlands of flowers, and substances for anointing, sometimes appear fresh and fragrant, and sometimes appear stale and foul-smelling. Sometimes they appear extremely fragrant, and sometimes foul-smelling, sometimes moist, and sometimes not dry. Likewise, utensils and objects sometimes appear uncleaned, and sometimes appear cleaned. Sometimes they appear sturdy, and sometimes they appear broken. Similarly, objects of light and darkness sometimes appear to arise, and sometimes appear to perish. Likewise, objects with which men and women enjoy pleasure are also unstable, sometimes appearing to arise, and sometimes appearing to perish. Having seen these, one thinks thus: Like this, the six kinds of external objects of enjoyment, and the ten kinds of bodily equipment, their changes and transformations are only manifestly apparent, both before and after. Alas! These conditioned phenomena are impermanent. Thinking thus, with mindfulness based on direct perception, one should understand that the eight modes of the causes of change in internal and external objects, as previously explained, should be applied appropriately to all things. In this way, one contemplates impermanence itself through the aspect of change. Thus, however the impermanence of change is, if one directly sees and experiences it, and becomes independent of others and unperturbed by others, then by contemplating and recollecting it in that way, a very definite understanding will arise. Therefore, this is called mindfulness based on direct perception.

Therefore, through such attention based on direct perception, after thoroughly analyzing the impermanence of change, for those conditioned and form-possessing phenomena that arise in an instant, decay and disappear, as if existing and non-existing, for that invisible, relying on attention based on direct perception, subsequent inference is made, as follows: Like this, those things that become earlier and later, these conditioned phenomena arise and decay in an instant, it is reasonable for these disappearing things. It is unreasonable for those things that remain as they are, therefore conditioned phenomena are momentary, if this and that cause and condition exist, they will arise like this and that, and after arising, they do not depend on the cause and condition of decay, but decay by their own power and ability. Those eight ways that are the cause of change are transforming into others and transforming into different, and becoming the cause of arising, but not the cause of decay. Why is that? Because the cause of decay and the destruction of conditioned phenomena are simultaneous, therefore they appear to arise differently, but it is not the case that they do not arise in all cases. Some conditioned phenomena also appear not to arise in all cases, for example, boiling water until it is completely exhausted at the end, and when the vessel world is burned by the fire at the end of the kalpa, there is no smoke at the end, and no residue of ashes. If someone says like this, then, those are completely exhausted after the later causes, and finally disappear in all cases. Fire does not act like that, therefore the eight mentioned earlier are the cause of change, while decay is by itself and by its own ability. Therefore, through such attention arising from inference, one can gain certainty about the momentary arising and decay of conditioned phenomena. After gaining certainty, one can also infer that in the non-perceptual other world, conditioned phenomena will enter, and infer as follows: Which sentient beings have good color and bad color, and noble lineage and

Those of low caste, those born into wealthy families, those born into poor families, those known to be of little power, those known to be of great power, those who are long-lived, those who are short-lived, those whose words are worthy of being heeded, those whose words are not worthy of being heeded, those with sharp faculties, and those with dull faculties also exist. These various sentient beings should have various actions, and it is impossible for them not to. Therefore, such sentient beings have undoubtedly done and accumulated various kinds of virtuous and non-virtuous actions in the past. Therefore, with these causes and conditions, their various bodies are manifested. This is also not reasonably caused by the cause of emanation by Ishvara. If it were caused by the cause of emanation by Ishvara, then is it caused only by the condition of Ishvara, or is it caused by another condition of emanation by Ishvara? If it is caused only by the condition of Ishvara, then Ishvara and these formations would occur simultaneously, which is not permissible. If Ishvara comes first and the formations come later, then Ishvara is not the condition of the formations, which is not permissible. If it is caused by the desire, effort, aspiration, and the cause of emanation of Ishvara, then it is not caused only by Ishvara, which is not permissible. Are these desires and so on with cause, or are they without cause? If they are with cause, and the cause is only Ishvara, then it is the same as the previous fault, which is not permissible. If the cause is another, then just as the cause of desire, effort, aspiration, and emanation is not Ishvara, but another dharma, then all formations will only be caused by the cause of another dharma. What is the use of examining Ishvara, which becomes meaningless? In this way, the mental activities arising from inference and those similar to them will necessarily lead sentient beings to enter the next world. Therefore, these three kinds of mental activities are influenced by faith,
