The term "without pleasure or pain" means that, abiding in such a state of equanimity, he fully relies on and cultivates mindfulness and awareness. Through repeated cultivation, he abandons that which makes the mind happy with the feeling of joy. Because the antidote to joy is the peace of being without pleasure or pain, and because the mind arises from the feeling of extreme peace, it is said to be "without pleasure or pain." "Having cultivated the third dhyana and abiding" should be understood as before. He has abandoned pleasure, and previously abandoned suffering, and because pleasantness and unpleasantness have also ceased, it is neither pleasure nor pain, with equanimity and mindfulness completely purified, having cultivated the fourth dhyana and abiding. Regarding what is said, "He has abandoned pleasure," because the antidote to pleasure is of the same kind, the antidote to abandonment is not indicated, but rather relies on the abandonment of pleasure done by its antidote. And what is its antidote? It is like this: equanimity, mindfulness, and awareness. By relying on and cultivating them, arising from the third dhyana, and because he abandons the pleasure of the ground of the third dhyana, it is said, "He has abandoned pleasure." "Previously abandoned suffering, and because pleasantness and unpleasantness have also ceased" means that at that time, the meditator has attained the result of completely transcending pleasure and pain, and because he has combined those things that he previously abandoned and those that he is now abandoning, it is said, "Previously abandoned suffering, and because pleasantness and unpleasantness have also ceased." In this regard, when entering the fourth dhyana, pleasure is abandoned. When entering the second dhyana, suffering is abandoned. When entering the third dhyana, pleasantness ceases. When entering the first dhyana, unpleasantness ceases. "Neither pleasure nor pain" means that because he has temporarily abandoned pleasure and pain, therefore for him, the remainder of feeling is neither pleasure nor pain, it merely exists, therefore it is said, "Neither pleasure."

Nor is it suffering. It is said that what is called non-suffering is such. Equanimity and mindfulness being completely pure means that at that time, from the first dhyana onwards, the faults of the lower grounds, such as: investigation, analysis, joy, inhalation, and exhalation are all abandoned. Because of abandoning these, whatever equanimity and mindfulness that person has is completely pure and completely clear. Therefore, the mind of one who abides in the fourth dhyana remains unmoving and is free from all movement. Therefore, it is said to be completely pure in equanimity and mindfulness. Here, to cultivate the fourth dhyana and abide means that the previous ones, such as the first dhyana, should also be understood as they are. The Hearer's Ground, Volume Eighteen. "He, having completely transcended all perceptions of form, the perceptions of resistance having ceased, not attending to the perceptions of diversity, thinking 'space is infinite,' having cultivated the sphere of infinite space, abides," as it is said. Among these, "He, having completely transcended all perceptions of form" means that for the sake of delighting in space, the perceptions associated with blue, yellow, red, and white colors do not appear, and being disgusted and free from attachment, he has completely transcended them. Therefore, it is said, "He, having completely transcended all perceptions of form." "The perceptions of resistance cease" means that because he has completely transcended and does not appear from these, he is separated from the many and various kinds of perceptions that are the cause of accumulating color and that are the cause of obstruction. Therefore, it is said, "The perceptions of resistance cease." "Not attending to the perceptions of diversity" means that being separated from these, the perceptions that specifically apply to the various kinds of resistance, such as: food, drink, vehicles, clothing, ornaments, dwellings, gardens, forests, armies, mountains, and so on, whatever perception enters, even if entrusted to them, all
