I am peaceful because of separation. The remaining mental activities of entering the second dhyana and equanimity should be understood as before, as appropriate. Likewise, the seven mental activities of entering equanimity in the realms between the realm of neither perception nor non-perception should also be performed as appropriate. In brief, the coarse characteristics of all the lower realms below the realm of nothingness should be understood as twofold. Namely, the lower realms are those that abide in extreme suffering, abide in extreme non-peace, and abide in extreme short life. Thus, these two coarse characteristics are sought in their entirety by the six bases as appropriate. From the mental activity of the ultimate result of application downwards, in whatever realms one desires to be free from attachment, in those higher realms, one should individually contemplate the characteristics of peace as appropriate. It is said that one dwells having attained the first dhyana, which is separated from desires, separated from sinful and unwholesome dharmas, possessing vitarka and vicara, and possessing joy and happiness born of separation. Here, "desires" are of two kinds: afflictive desires and material desires. "Separated from desires" is also of two kinds: separated from co-emergence and separated from objects. "Separated from sinful and unwholesome dharmas" refers to those unwholesome dharmas of near afflictions that arise from the cause of desire, such as evil deeds committed by the body, evil deeds committed by speech, evil deeds committed by mind, as well as weapons, punishments, battles, discord, disputes, harm, deceit, deception, lack of compassion, and all instances of false speech. Because of abandoning these, it is said to be separated from sinful and unwholesome dharmas. "Possessing vitarka and vicara" means that because one does not regard vitarka and vicara as faults, one possesses vitarka and vicara, which are the antidotes to desire, and virtuous dharmas, therefore it is said to possess vitarka and vicara. "From separation" means from whatever desires one is separated.

It is due to the ultimate practice of mindfulness. The term "born" refers to the fact that it is only after that cause and that condition that it is truly born. Therefore, it is said to be "born of solitude." The term "having joy and happiness" is because one obtains the meaning of desire and hope, and does not regard joy as a fault, and is free from all evil destinies, and possesses a vast and capable mind and body, therefore it is called "having joy and happiness." The term "meditation" is called meditation because it is to truly focus on the object of meditation, and to focus on mindfulness with one-pointedness. The term "first" is called first because it is counted according to the order of initially departing from the desire realm. The term "accomplished" is called accomplished because it is the fruit of achieving ultimate practice. The term "abides" is because later, through repeated practice of meditation, one obtains as desired, and obtains effortlessly, and obtains without difficulty. Therefore, the equipoise of meditation enables one to pass through the night, the day, the day and night, even between seven days and nights, or as long as one desires, so it is called abides. That which is free from investigation and analysis, and the inner being is completely serene, and the stream of mind has become one, the second dhyana, which is without investigation, without analysis, born of samadhi, having joy and happiness, is accomplished and abides, as it is said. Among them, "free from investigation and analysis, and the inner being is completely serene" refers to completely turning the mind away from the characteristics of samadhi that has investigation and has analysis, and well focusing on the characteristics of samadhi that is without investigation and without analysis, separating from the unstable practice of the object of meditation, and on the stable practice of the object of meditation, with one "and" word, making the mind serene and entering serenity, and abiding, therefore, it is said that it is free from investigation and analysis, and the inner being is completely serene. The term "the stream of mind has become one" refers to the fact that in order to make the practice completely pure, investigation and analysis will interrupt and cut off that samadhi that is without investigation and without analysis.
