Arising in dependence, and when the mind arising in dependence arises, when aversion arises towards not abiding in abandonment, and when longing and turning back and disharmony exist, he thinks thus: "My mind is like this, it is not truly free from desire and liberated from all desires." Therefore, in order to extensively abandon the remainder of that habitual tendency, I will consciously direct my mind, and by consciously grasping and subduing it like water, and by the nature of reality consciously grasping it, I will extensively abide in delighting in abandonment and delighting in meditation. This is called the attention of investigation. Thus, extensively abiding in delighting in abandonment and delighting in meditation, and diligently practicing the cultivation of calm abiding and insight, he repeatedly investigates and cultivates its antidote, and from time to time investigates the nature of what has been abandoned and what has not been abandoned. For a while, he separates the mind from all the afflictions that operate in desire, but it is not the destruction of the seed. At that time, the ultimate path of application for the first dhyana, the attention that has arisen correctly as the antidote to all afflictions, is called the attention of ultimate application. Immediately after that, due to that cause and that condition, he enters into the actual state of the first dhyana, and the attention that arises in accordance with the actual state of the dhyana is called the attention of the fruit of ultimate application. At that time, when the attention of extreme solitude and the attention of gathering joy arise, the body is completely filled with the joy and bliss born of solitude. At the time of the attention of ultimate application, sometimes it pervades in the manner of a small object of bliss. Sometimes it pervades in the manner of a very large and very extensive object of bliss. At the time when the attention of the fruit of ultimate application arises, for example, there is no part of the entire body that is not pervaded by the joy and bliss born of solitude, and there is not even a little bit that needs to be pervaded. Those.

At that time, being separated from desires, being separated from sinful and unwholesome dharmas, with investigation and analysis, possessing joy and happiness born of separation, abiding in accomplishing the five branches of the first dhyana, and abiding in the fruit of cultivating the antidote to desire, and obtaining freedom from attachment to all desires, this is called (the first dhyana). Among them, the attention that knows each characteristic individually also completely understands what should be abandoned, and also completely understands what should be obtained, and also focuses the mind in order to abandon what should be abandoned, and in order to obtain what should be obtained. The attention arising from faith and understanding then begins to diligently practice in order to abandon what should be abandoned, and in order to obtain what should be obtained. The attention of extreme separation then abandons great afflictions. The attention of gathering joy then abandons intermediate afflictions. The attention of analysis then makes the mind abide in the absence of manifest pride in what has been obtained. The attention of ultimate practice then abandons subtle afflictions. The attention of the fruit of ultimate practice then experiences the fruit of cultivating these attentions. Furthermore, whatever attention that knows each characteristic individually, and whatever attention that arises from faith and understanding, possesses the antidote of refutation, and is a conforming attention. Whatever attention of extreme separation, and whatever attention of ultimate practice, possesses the antidote of abandonment, and is an antidotal attention. Among them, whatever attention of gathering joy is an antidotal attention, and a pleasing attention. Among them, whatever attention of conduct is called an attention of individual discernment. Thus, in these six attentions, it should be known that these four attentions are included, namely conforming, antidotal, pleasing, and individual discernment. How does one enter the samadhi of the first dhyana with the seven attentions?

Likewise, it should be understood that entering the second dhyana, the third dhyana, the fourth dhyana, as well as the sphere of infinite space, the sphere of infinite consciousness, the sphere of nothingness, and the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, is also done through seven types of attention. Among them, in order to enter the second dhyana, that which distinguishes discursive thought as having a coarse nature and distinguishes the second dhyana, which is without discursive thought, as having a peaceful nature, is called attention that distinguishes characteristics. Among them, entering the first dhyana, attaining the first dhyana, because the first occurrence of unstable conduct on the object of the meditative state arises, seeing discursive thoughts as coarse, therefore, whatever coarse arising of the object's mental utterance is, that is called discursive thought. The extremely subtle mental utterance that follows and is related to that unstable conduct on the object is called investigation. Discursive thought and investigation are mental factors; when the mind arises, they arise, and when they arise together, they are equally associated and enter simultaneously. Thus, they are understood to arise from within and are the source of external arising. All of these, whether in the past, future, or present, arise from causes, dependently arise, arise separately, arise and then decay, all are not long-lasting, do not abide for long, completely disturb the mind, agitate it, and enter in a non-peaceful manner. The nature of that ground, in relation to the higher ground, is the dark side because it abides in suffering, and it also has a small benefit of happiness arising from being separated from desires. Abiding in that, constantly, and firmly, the mind's conduct, accompanied by discursive thought and investigation, arises, not like peace being more peaceful. Thus, in those ways, discursive thoughts are distinguished as having a coarse nature. For the second dhyana, which is without discursive thought, there is no such coarse nature in any way. Therefore, the second dhyana is that coarseness itself.
