And having some extremely tamed in mind, and those that are in accordance with this, it should be known that they are the signs of being with mental engagement and the signs of being completely purified. The condensed summary is: going and beseeching, praising, questioning and examining, guarding, accumulating and extremely secluded, one-pointed, obscuring, various conducts, for mental engagement and meditation, it is necessary to combine them. The place of yoga practice belongs to the place of the Hearers, the third place of yoga is complete. The seventeenth volume of the Hearer's Ground. Thus, the yogi who has attained mental engagement, having entered into the virtue of abandonment, his going to the city, there is no other, only these two. Which two? Namely, the mundane and the supramundane. Among them, the first yogi with mental engagement thinks: I should go by mundane or supramundane means of going. For this mental engagement, he does it many times. How many times he does it, just like that, as the days and nights pass, his body becomes extremely tamed, and his mind becomes more and more one-pointed, and becomes softer. When his mental engagement becomes firm, stable, and hard, and faith arises in the complete purification of the object, and the signs of calm abiding and insight also become fully possessed, then, for the mundane path or the supramundane path, whichever he wants to go by, he strives diligently in the practice of that. Among them, if someone wants to go by the mundane path in this life, and not by the supramundane path, is there such a person? Answer: There are four. Namely: all the outsiders, and even though they are people in this Dharma, but the practitioners who previously practiced calm abiding are dull-witted, and likewise, even though their faculties are sharp, their roots of virtue have not yet matured, and Bodhisattvas want to attain enlightenment in the future, not in this life. Such a person will go by the mundane path in this life. There are also two kinds of places for the mundane path, namely, having all the bonds.

Ordinary individuals and, students who have severed their bonds. What are those? Those who roughly contemplate and abide in desires, and those who wish to regard the first dhyana with its arising as peaceful, and who go forth free from desire, and likewise, those who should be freed from desire up to the sphere of nothingness, and likewise, those who abide in non-perception, and those who rely on dhyana to manifest the five superknowledges, these should be known. Among these, for the sake of abandoning desire for desires, the yogi who strives diligently, through seven types of mental engagement, subsequently attains freedom from desire for desires. What are those seven? It is said: individually discerning characteristics, arising from faith, utterly secluded, gathering joy, engaging in conduct, and engaging with the ultimate fruit of union. Among these, what is the mental engagement of individually discerning characteristics? It is said: by mental engagement, one individually discerns the coarse characteristics of desires, and individually discerns the peaceful characteristics of the first dhyana. How does one individually discern the coarse characteristics of desires? It is said: when one thoroughly seeks the six bases of desires, namely meaning, characteristic, aspect, time, and reason, then one individually discerns the coarse characteristics. Among these, first, thoroughly seeking the coarse meaning is: like this, these desires are accompanied by faults, having many harms, many like a plague, many like an infectious disease. Thus, one thoroughly seeks the coarse meaning. Whatever those desires have, many faults and many like infectious diseases, those are the coarse meanings. Among these, thoroughly seeking the object is: for internal desires, there is desire for desires, and also for external desires, there is desire for desires, thus one thoroughly seeks. Among these, thoroughly seeking the own-nature is: these are the desires of affliction, these are the desires of objects. Those also accord with the place of happiness, and the suffering of
