These sentient beings are deluded by perversion. Due to the cause of being deluded, they generate existence for the manifestation of feelings in this life and bodies in the next. Because of craving, they have done the root actions of birth. Therefore, in the future, this heap of suffering, which arises from the causes of karma and afflictions, will be manifested, and they will grasp at its characteristics. Having grasped at the characteristics in this way, they also generate faith inwardly, thinking, "My own heap of suffering has become just like that." Those bodies that began from the endless, limitless beginning, the beginning of which is invisible, have also become like that. All those bodies of these sentient beings, past, future, and present, which are pervaded by the heap of suffering, are manifested in just that way, and will also arise later. They generate faith in this way. All these minds that attend to dependent arising through these conditions arise from attending to what is truly real, and not from faith. Furthermore, when one attends to one's own present aggregates of dependent arising, one dwells observing the Dharma in relation to the inner body and phenomena. When one attends to the present aggregates of dependent arising of others, one dwells observing the Dharma in relation to the outer body and phenomena. When one attends to the past and future aggregates of dependent arising of oneself and others, one dwells observing the Dharma in relation to the inner and outer body and phenomena, and the rest is the same as before. Among these, the first practitioner who is extremely diligent in discriminating the elements is like this: he sees the outer earth element, that is, he grasps at the characteristic of solidity in all things such as earth, mountains, grass, forests, gravel, pebbles, jewels, pearls, beryl, precious conch shell, coral, and so on, and he believes in the inner solidity itself. The outer water...

For example, like this, one grasps the characteristics of wetness in rivers, streams, lakes, ponds, wells, and so on; similarly, for external fire, such as: a large pile of fire, being scorched by the sunlight in spring, beings infected with plague, a large house fire burning, and so on; similarly, for the external aggregate of wind, such as: east, south, west, north winds, and so on; similarly, for the gaps between the mandalas of external wind; similarly, for those that are not pervaded by place, cannot be pervaded by the appearance of form, have holes, have cavities, and have the space of opportunity, from these one grasps the characteristics, and believes in the inner water element, fire element, wind element, and space element. Similarly, through the conceptualization arising from the power of hearing and thinking, one also grasps the characteristics of the consciousness element in this way. If the inner sense base of the eye is not completely damaged and the form appears, but the attention associated with it does not closely abide, then the eye consciousness associated with it will not arise, but if it is the opposite, it will arise. For the mind and phenomena, and between consciousness, it should also be understood in this way, this is grasping the characteristics of the consciousness element. Having grasped the characteristics in this way, one believes that this body, formed from the four great elements, possesses essence, element, type, and nature by all these consciousnesses. One also believes that those four great elements initially exist roughly only in the limbs and parts. After this, through the differentiation of parts, one believes that it is extremely subtle. Similarly, one believes it is like dust in the sunlight, similarly, one believes that it gradually reaches the extent of extremely fine dust. If one believes that each limb and part has countless collections of extremely fine dust, then what need is there to mention the entire body? This is only for the colored elements that are diligent in analyzing the elements.
