When the mind is manifestly weary of things that are conditioned and powerful, it does not turn towards things that are tainted and in accordance with taint; it is not in harmony with them, it places them outwards, it separates from them. Thus, his mind, with respect to these two things, namely, becoming completely joined and manifestly moistened, then with a smooth mind, he makes manifest, draws near, rejoices in, and completely joins with the things that arise from renunciation and solitude. Thus, his mind, with respect to these two things, namely, becoming completely joined and manifestly delighted, these two cause him not to turn towards all the dark sides, but to engage in manifestly turning towards all the white sides. Therefore, in this way, by the thought of the mind becoming completely weary, he does not turn towards all the dark sides, and by the thought of the mind becoming manifestly moistened, he turns towards all the white sides. From time to time, like this, by the thought arising from extreme familiarity, he thoroughly establishes the inner abiding of the mind, and from time to time, like this, by the thought that combines wisdom and vision, he distinguishes things, distinguishes them well, completely understands them, and completely examines them. Thus, his mind is seized by calm abiding and special insight, and in every way has approached being the cause of all qualities, therefore, from time to time, day and night, moment and instant, in a short while, after these have passed, it will become more excellent. For example, like a blacksmith or a skilled blacksmith's apprentice, when he burns gold or silver in the fire and washes it with water from time to time in order to purify all impurities and dross, then for making those ornaments, it will become manifest in a soft and workable manner. Similarly, the craftsman who is in accordance with the blacksmith or the skilled blacksmith's apprentice, uses blacksmith's tools to transform the ornament into whatever shape he desires.

The yogi also, at any time, if the mind does not tend towards the defilements and impurities such as desire, hatred, and delusion, then by not tending towards them, he disciplines it; by not tending towards the suffering of afflictions, but tending towards joy in virtuous things, he makes it joyful by tending towards them. Then, the mind of the yogi, towards whichever side of calm abiding or insight he decides to discipline it, will be very close, very easy to enter into yoga, become unmoving, unwavering, and also proceed in order to truly accomplish the meaning of what is thought. Then, how does one make a beginner initially focus on contemplating practice? When he thus decides to focus on practice, first he should rejoice in abandoning, and touch upon one-pointedness of mind. The yogi, the knower of yoga, should first teach the beginner, the diligent practitioner of yoga, thus: 'Fair-faced one, come here! The three causes for your grasping at signs are like this: relying on seeing, hearing, or relying on the mind's recollection and completely pondering. These five signs are like this: universally arising, initially arising, the sign of faults, the sign of appearance, and the sign of examining things, please guard them!' If the beginner, the diligent practitioner of yoga, is a practitioner of desire, and is disciplined by impurity, then in order for him to guard these five signs, how should he be taught? He should be taught thus: 'Fair-faced one, come here! In whatever village or town you rely on and reside in, or in any other village or town, any man or woman is afflicted by disease, suffering and with severe fever, or has died and passed away from the time of death, even if you have only heard of it, or if the man or woman has not become like that, but the man or woman's friend, minister, relative, or any in-law has become like that, even if you have only heard of it, the assembly of people belonging to the village or town'
