One should quickly and swiftly cultivate the contemplation of unattractiveness, focusing on it as the object of meditation, and swiftly and swiftly realize it. There are five aspects of cultivation: gathering the mind inward, absence of mindfulness and non-attention, attending to something other than that, attending to the antidote, and attending to the realm of signlessness. Among these, the nine mental abidings that precede insight meditation are what gather the mind inward. In order to avoid being biased towards all signs and to be free from distraction, from the very beginning, one should understand that it is the absence of mindfulness and non-attention. Attending to other objects of meditation that are the nature of the state of meditative equipoise, apart from the object of the state of meditative equipoise, is attending to something other than that. From unattractiveness as the antidote to ugliness, to the mindfulness of inhaling and exhaling as the antidote to discursive thoughts, and the antidote to form, up to the space element, is attending to the antidote. Not attending to all signs, and attending to the realm of signlessness, is attending to the realm of signlessness. Those summaries of objects of meditation, although they are established as the nature of pervasive objects of meditation, in the context of this meaning, it should be understood that it is gathering the mind inward, and the absence of mindfulness and non-attention. Among these, for the initial practitioner, in order to avoid the mind from initially focusing on unattractiveness alone, or on any object of meditation other than that, and to be free from distraction, one should strive to think, "Is my mind signless, free from discursive thoughts, peaceful, extremely peaceful, immovable, unshakable, effortless, and without exertion, inwardly joyful?" When one strives in this way, all external signs that arise will become the absence of mindfulness and non-attention, and that is his absence of mindfulness and non-attention, thereby cultivating the object of meditation. When he engages in yoga in that, it generates joy, and

One practices with objects such as ugliness, which have characteristics and are accompanied by conceptualization. How does one practice? One practices with vipashyana that follows after characteristics, follows after thorough investigation, and follows after individual discernment. However, one does not solely exert oneself in vipashyana; rather, one turns back from the characteristics of vipashyana and attends to that very object in the manner of shamatha. At that time, that object is neither abandoned nor grasped. Because one causes that object to enter into shamatha, it is not abandoned. Because one does not make it an object of attention and does not conceptualize it, it is not grasped. Thus, one cultivates the object by way of inwardly focusing the mind. The object that possesses the characteristic of vipashyana not being grasped is without distraction. The object that possesses the characteristic of shamatha being grasped is the characteristic of knowable things. If one is devoted to focusing on one object but does not repeatedly cultivate it, then one's devotion is such that, for the sake of directly realizing knowable things, it will not become increasingly purified and increasingly refined. Because one is both devoted and repeatedly cultivates, therefore one's devotion is such that, for the sake of directly realizing knowable things, it will become increasingly purified and increasingly refined. For example, if a student of a painter initially only exerts himself in the work of painting, he first learns from the teacher, then looks at and looks at the model, and then begins to paint. He paints and paints, analyzes, distinguishes, and then paints again. The more he erases and paints, the more the painting appears increasingly purified and increasingly refined. Thus, if he exerts himself well, at another time he will become like the teacher or even more excellent than him. If that painting is not erased but remains as it is,

If one repeatedly draws on it, then its picture will never become completely clear, and this should also be understood in the same way. The more one likes an object, the more one meditates on it, but it is not the case that the more one meditates, the more one likes it. When one likes becoming small, one meditates on becoming small itself, and the same is true for becoming large and immeasurable. After meditating, sometimes one likes becoming small itself, and sometimes one likes becoming large and immeasurable, and the same should be understood for becoming large and immeasurable. Among these, the characteristics, images, and illusions of forms are coarse, like a snake. For formless dharmas, it is only how they are experienced and the names and terms established according to what appears, and this is called true yoga. The nine yogas of the white side should be understood as śamatha (calm abiding), vipaśyanā (insight), and conformity. The nine that are the opposite of these are non-conformity. These are the eighteen yogas established on the black and white sides, and this is called one-pointedness of mind. Among these, what is the purification of obscurations? It is said: A yogi who thus truly and diligently strives purifies the mind from obscurations by fully knowing the nature of the four causes, fully knowing the basis, fully knowing the faults, and meditating on the antidote. Among these, what is the nature of obscuration? It is said: The nature of obscuration is fourfold: complete suffering, obscuration, discrimination, and extreme clinging to self. Among these, complete suffering refers to afflictive desire, displeasure, pleasure, discomfort, and confusion that strive for renunciation and extreme aversion. Among these, obscuration refers to the five obscurations such as longing for desire. Among these, discrimination refers to the discrimination of desire.
