Furthermore, because various obscurations and painful conditions of body and mind repeatedly arise, his mind will not quickly settle into samadhi. This is the practice of habituation. Then, what is the practice of non-relaxation? It is to practice constantly and to practice with reverence. If, for the sake of alms, or for the sake of serving and honoring the guru, or for the sake of caring for the sick, or for the sake of doing the work of prostrations, or for any such immediate affairs that are in accordance with the times, even if one rises from samadhi, one is not distracted, and one is devoted to it, inclined to it, and does everything with a mind settled in it, doing it quickly and quickly, and even if one is exhausted at the end, one returns again and strives diligently to settle correctly within. If monks, nuns, laymen, laywomen, royal families, and Brahmin retinues gather together, one does not let the time pass for a long time because of the gathering, but speaks with warmth and moderation, and does not initiate many conversations, but only maintains solitude. It is also like this to initiate diligence: What I am to attain, I must attain today. Why is that? Because I have the causes and conditions for death. I may have a disturbance of wind, bile, or phlegm, or I may eat unsuitable food, which will weaken my body, or I may be harmed by the venom of a snake, scorpion, or insect, or I may encounter fears from humans and non-humans. Always keep these situations in mind and remain vigilant. And again, like this, one also remains vigilant: Alas, how wretched! Even if I live for seven days, six days, five days, four days, three days, two days, one day, or a moment, half a moment, or a fraction of a moment, it is still worthwhile. Alas, how wretched! Even if I live only for the time it takes to eat a mouthful of food, or for the time it takes to inhale and exhale, or for the time it takes to exhale and inhale, it is still worthwhile. As long as I live, I must keep yoga in mind.

Therefore, in order to make the Buddha's teachings into yoga, just that, I should think like this: I will do many things for the Buddha's teachings, and abide diligently in this. That is the non-lax practice. Then, what is the non-perverted practice? The yogi, with the knowledge of yoga, strives diligently just as it is said and shown, and correctly understands its meaning and words, without conceit, not clinging to one's own views, not understanding rashly, and will not despise the guru's teachings. That is the non-perverted practice. Then, what is the practice of time? At all times, practice the signs of quiescence, the signs of insight, the signs of attachment, and the signs of equanimity. And also know quiescence, the sign of quiescence, the time of quiescence, insight, the sign of insight, the time of insight, attachment, the sign of attachment, the time of attachment, equanimity, the sign of equanimity, and the time of equanimity. Then, what is quiescence? There are nine ways of abiding the mind. Among them, the mind is without signs, without discrimination, peaceful, extremely peaceful, abiding in peace and not mixed. Therefore, it is called quiescence. Then, what is the sign of quiescence? There are two types: the sign of the object and the sign of the basis. Among them, the sign of the object is consistent with the knowable things of the aspect of quiescence, and the sign of focusing on the image. Through this object, the mind becomes peaceful. Then, what is the sign of the basis? After fully practicing the mind of quiescence, in order to fully purify quiescence, combining the mind with insight, that is the sign of the basis. Then, what is the time of quiescence? It is said, when the mind becomes distracted or suspects distraction, for the sake of practice, that is the time of quiescence. Similarly, when fully practicing the mind of insight, it is lost due to discrimination, or temporary actions.
