And so on, is the dark side. The opposite of that is the absence of afflictions, which is the white side. In this way, one seeks everywhere. In the past, future, and present times, relying on these six elements, one will enter the womb in the mother's womb. In this way, one seeks time everywhere. For example, just as relying on the causes of grass and trees, and wrapping around from all directions of the sky, it becomes the number of houses. Similarly, also relying on these six elements, as well as the causes of bones, tendons, skin, flesh, and blood, wrapping around from all directions of the sky, for those foundations that possess the seeds of previous karma and afflictions, one refers to them as body, body, as names, symbols, and terms. In this way, one seeks the reasoning of dependence everywhere. If one fully relies on and becomes accustomed to distinguishing the elements in detail, and does this many times, one will abandon pride, and this is also a reliable teaching. This is also seeing one's own wisdom individually, and the act of inferring accordingly. This is also the well-known nature of reality, and the inconceivable nature of reality. In this way, one seeks the reasoning of action, the reasoning of establishment, and the reasoning of the nature of reality everywhere. Among them, diligently distinguishing the object of mindfulness of breathing in and breathing out, how does one seek the meaning everywhere? Breathing in and breathing out is when the mind is focused on the object, without forgetting and clearly stating, it is mindfulness of breathing in and breathing out. In this way, one seeks the meaning everywhere. Breathing in and breathing out are external related to the body, and are also encompassed by the external sense bases. One contemplates in this way, and in this way, one seeks things everywhere. There are two types of breathing in. There are also two types of breathing out. What enters inside is breathing in. What exhales outward is breathing out. These are long breaths in and out. These are short. This is experiencing the entire body separately.

It is. This is not, like this, completely seeking one's own nature. When inhalation stops, exhalation occurs. When exhalation stops, inhalation occurs. The entry of inhalation and exhalation is related to the life force and, to this body that is combined with the consciousness aggregate. Inhalation and, exhalation have a basis, so they are impermanent, like this, completely seeking the common nature. Like this, for inhalation and, exhalation, the mind that is produced by discrimination without mindfulness, the Dharma that is completely distracted, is accompanied by afflictions, it is the black side. The opposite of that is without afflictions, it is the white side, like this, extensively and completely seeking the sides. Inhalation and, exhalation are dependent on body and mind in the past, future, and, present times, and body and mind are also dependent on inhalation and, exhalation, like this, completely seeking time. Here, doing inhalation and, doing exhalation, or whose inhalation and, exhalation, those do not exist either, however, these formations and dependent origination that arise from causes, are merely spoken of as names and symbols and, in designation, like this, completely seeking the related reasoning. Inhalation and, exhalation, relying completely on mindfulness and becoming accustomed, practicing many times will cause discrimination to cease, this is also a reliable scriptural authority. It is also one's own individual wisdom and, what is seen and, the activity of inference and, the nature of fame. It is also the inconceivable nature, like this, completely seeking the reasoning of action and, the reasoning of establishing validity and, the reasoning of nature. Like this, after completely seeking the six bases with the object of contemplation that examines the aspects, the mind is repeatedly pacified inwardly, and those very things that were sought in the manner of insight are also individually contemplated again and again, relying on its calm abiding.

Therefore, through Vipassanā, it is completely purified, and relying on Vipassanā, Śamatha will also increase and expand. Regarding the objects of the wise and the objects for purifying afflictions, how Vipassanā completely seeks the six things, these will be explained in later chapters. In this regard, the yogi should understand that there are nine kinds of combinations belonging to the white side, and nine kinds of combinations belonging to the black side, which are the opposite of these. Namely: the corresponding combination, the habituated combination, the non-inverted combination, the non-lax combination, the time combination, the proximate discrimination combination, the insatiable combination, the non-contradictory combination, and the correct combination. These nine kinds of combinations belonging to the white side can quickly bring the mind into Samādhi, and can also enter the excellent state of Samādhi, whereby all the grounds that can be reached and attained can also be reached and attained quickly and without hindrance. However, the combinations of the black side cannot quickly bring the mind into Samādhi, nor can they enter the excellent state of Samādhi, whereby all the grounds that can be reached and attained cannot be reached and attained quickly and without hindrance. So, what is the corresponding combination? If there is an act of desire, one should focus the mind on the impure contemplation; if there is an act of hatred, one should focus on the contemplation of loving-kindness; if there is an act of distraction, one should focus on the mindfulness of breathing in and breathing out; if it is an equal or weak nature of affliction, one should strive with the object that will generate joy, this is the corresponding combination. So, what is the habituated combination? That is, for Śamatha and Vipassanā, even if there is only a little habituation, it is not entirely a beginner. For example, a beginner strives with a corresponding object.
