It is also the time when distraction diminishes, which is the time to abide in tranquility for the sake of cultivation. What is Vipassanā (Higher Seeing)? Vipassanā observes and analyzes by focusing on four aspects, three doors, and six bases of differentiation. What are the characteristics of Vipassanā? There are two characteristics: the characteristic of the object and the characteristic of the base. Among them, the characteristic of the object is that which is in accordance with the knowable objects of Vipassanā, and the characteristic of focusing on images, which enables wisdom to analyze. Among them, the characteristic of the base is the mind of Vipassanā that is fully cultivated, and in order to fully purify Vipassanā thereafter, whatever combines the mind with tranquility is the characteristic of the base. What is the time for Vipassanā? It is the time when the mind of tranquility is fully cultivated, or only the initial time, which is the time to cultivate Vipassanā in order to realize knowable objects as they truly are. What is grasping? Grasping any object that arises initially causes the mind to be correctly uplifted, correctly delighted, correctly shown, and correctly led to grasp. What is the characteristic of grasping? Any object that initially arises causes the mind to grasp, and the effort that arises in accordance with it. What is the time for grasping? It is the time when the mind becomes dull, or when there is doubt of dullness, which is the time to grasp for the sake of cultivation. What is equanimity? With respect to the objects of tranquility and Vipassanā, the mind is without any affliction, with equality of mind, abiding, entering naturally, the mind feels comfortable, and the mind is capable, guided by actions without subsequent effort. What is the characteristic of equanimity? Any object that causes the mind to be equanimous, and not exerting excessive effort towards that object. What is the time for equanimity? With respect to tranquility and Vipassanā, it is the time when the mind is without dullness or agitation.

That is, for the sake of meditation, the time of abandoning equanimity is the yoga of time. Among them, what is the yoga of near observation? It is to hold those characteristics well and observe well. Because of holding well and observing well, when one wants to enter samadhi, one enters samadhi at that time, and dwells in as much as one wants to enter samadhi. When one wants to arise from samadhi, at that time, abandoning the image of the object of samadhi, one arises from samadhi by attending to the object of the distracted nature of non-equanimity. That is the yoga of near observation. Among them, what is the yoga of insatiability? That is, one is not satisfied with virtuous dharmas, nor does one retreat from abandoning them. Moreover, one dwells many times in the most excellent state, desiring to manifest it from the superior to the superior. If there is a higher task, one does not interrupt and become lazy with a little, a slight, or a peaceful state. That is the yoga of insatiability. Among them, what is the yoga of non-contradiction? That is, one does not destroy or sever the root of the precepts that have been properly taken. Even if one sees a young woman of beautiful color who can generate desire, one does not grasp her as a characteristic, nor does one grasp her as a sign of manifestation. One makes a suitable companion, strives for sleeplessness, has few desires, few activities, little distraction, and remembers and recollects what has been done for a long time and what has been said for a long time. Such dharmas that are not in accordance with this are called the yoga of non-contradiction. Those dharmas are in accordance with and not in contradiction with single-mindedness, and one does not enter into them for the sake of mental distraction, nor for the sake of external distraction. One does not enter into them because the inner mind is unsuitable and for the sake of recollection. That is called the yoga of non-contradiction. Among them, what is the true yoga? That is, after having faith and having faith, one properly cultivates the object of meditation. That is called the true yoga. If one strives diligently for the impure, then also with the superior insight that only follows the characteristics, with the aspects of the impure.
