It will also change. From obtaining a body that has been duly accomplished by those great roots of virtue, when one duly accomplishes favorable conditions, and also touches upon the one-pointedness of mind, and enters into the certainty of reality, realizing the fruit of stream-enterer, or the fruit of once-returner, or the fruit of non-returner, but at that time not realizing the supreme fruit of arhatship, that is called abiding in the ultimate application. When one realizes the arhatship that has abandoned all defilements, at that time, it is ultimate. These six types of individuals, the establishment of them, shows the beginning, middle, and end of all the practices of the Hearers. Among them, the lineage shows the beginning of the practice of the Hearers. The ultimate one shows the end. Those other than them show the middle. Among them, is the time of complete nirvana of all stream-enterers definite and equal? Or is the time of complete nirvana of all of them indefinite and unequal? It is said: The time of complete nirvana of all of them is neither definite nor equal. However, it should be known that they attain complete nirvana according to how it is reasonable and how they find favorable conditions. Some will attain complete nirvana after a long time. For some, it is not a very long time. For some, it is only quickly. Although it is so, among all the individuals who abide in the lineage, whoever quickly attains complete nirvana, that one will definitely accomplish three existences. In one existence, one enters. In one, one causes to ripen. In one, one becomes fully ripened, and in that very one, one attains complete nirvana. If one does not attain complete nirvana, then that one will definitely die in learning, and even if it is delayed, one will not accomplish more than seven existences. That is called the establishment of entering. What are the signs of a stream-enterer?

Here, a wise person, merely upon entering (the Dharma), even if reborn in another world and forgets his teacher and the Dharma Vinaya, the well-spoken and ill-spoken Dharma Vinaya still exist, they are not non-existent. Even if he hears many praises, eulogies, and benefits of the ill-spoken Dharma Vinaya, he will not enter into it, nor will he renounce. Even if he enters and renounces, it is like putting a creature born in honey into excrement, or putting someone who enjoys desires into a filthy mire. This is because, merely by the power of previous karma, he naturally dislikes it (ill-speaking) and will quickly revert. Even if the praises and benefits of the well-spoken Dharma Vinaya, and a little bit of the bad aspects, have not disappeared, or have not been heard; whether heard or not heard, he will quickly enter into it and renounce. Having entered and renounced in this way, it is like putting a creature born in honey into honey, or placing someone who enjoys desires in abundant enjoyment of desires. This is also because, merely by the power of previous karma, he naturally rejoices in it (well-speaking) and will not revert. This is the first characteristic of a stream-enterer. Furthermore, a stream-enterer, although temporarily not free from the afflictions that cause one to fall into the lower realms and unfavorable conditions, will not be born in unfavorable conditions. The Blessed One, considering the stream-enterer, said: 'Whoever has a correct view of the world, whoever possesses great (merit), even through thousands of lifetimes, will not fall into the lower realms.' It is like that. This refers to not being born in unfavorable conditions when gradually entering those great virtuous Dharmas that will fully ripen. It does not refer to entering other (evil Dharmas). This is the second characteristic of a stream-enterer. Furthermore, a stream-enterer, upon hearing or remembering the qualities of the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, will definitely generate virtue.

And, beings with great faith endowed with the element of earth will obtain, and with that object, again and again, with a mind moistened by faith, not being satisfied, they will obtain what is called "joy" and what is called "hair standing on end," which is the third sign of an entrant. Furthermore, an entrant, like light, naturally feels ashamed of all sources of evil and possesses great shame, which is the fourth sign of an entrant. Furthermore, an entrant has a strong desire and longing for listening, reciting, extensively explaining, practicing yoga, and contemplating, and seeks whatever is virtuous, which is the fifth sign of an entrant. Furthermore, an entrant is like this: in order to accomplish correctly, in all faultless actions and in all virtuous aspects that are correctly undertaken, they strive firmly, strive steadily, and strive very certainly, which is the sixth sign of an entrant. Furthermore, an entrant is naturally less desirous, the entanglements of afflictions become smaller and smaller, they do not persist, and they are without deceit, without pretense, without arrogance, without pride, without self-grasping, they will certainly destroy these, and they will manifestly engage in merit and hate faults, which is the seventh sign of an entrant. Furthermore, an entrant's mind does not become discouraged in the vast places to be understood, they do not belittle themselves, they do not dwell in a state of powerlessness, and they have more willingness, which is the eighth sign of an entrant. It should be known that the signs of entrants are many that are similar to this. These are just a part of them. These signs, for entrants who dwell in small roots of virtue, are intermittent, discontinuous, and not completely pure, that is, small. For those who dwell in medium roots of virtue, they are medium.
