What is the pleasantness of having? It is like this, here some people are with happiness and with pleasantness, transforming from killing to wrong views. What is the unpleasantness of having unwholesomeness? It is like this, here some people are with suffering and with unpleasantness, transforming from killing to wrong views. What is the equanimity of having unwholesomeness? It is like this, here there is a king or a minister, or anyone who is the owner, or a lama, or someone like a lama. They themselves do not want to commit the sin of killing, but if the people who carry out the orders do it, they will ignore it, not prevent it and not subdue it. Because they ignore it, the thing happens, and they also experience that karmic result, it will not be hidden. For the equanimity that is unwholesome, they will follow awareness and observation, not abandoning but ignoring, and what is the feeling that is neither suffering nor happiness when engaging in unwholesomeness. What is extreme joy? When observing that the place of the Sangha is completely pure, what is the joy of purity from the beginning, the joy that is preceded by no regret, that is extreme joy, it is mental pleasure and mental comfort. What is joy? What is the joy that is preceded by correct practice, that is joy, it is mental pleasure and mental comfort. What is extreme gentleness? What is the state of body and mind becoming capable by being separated from bad places. What is happiness? Like this, the body and mind are capable, what is the happiness that does not harm the body and mind, and the happiness of liberation, being separated from the bad places of any side, thereby being liberated from those nearby afflictions. What is Samadhi? What is the state of mind being one-pointed, thinking correctly about the object of focus. The Blessed One said that in the practice without outflows, Samadhi is first and liberation is later, because by the power of the accomplishment of Samadhi, the mind is liberated from the afflictions. In the practice with outflows, liberation is first and Samadhi is later, because abandoning afflictions is

It is the fruit of the ultimate application of mind, for the sake of attaining the actual samadhi. It is said that the samadhi of liberation arises suddenly, for example, that very application of mind that is the ultimate of practice, and the uninterruptedness other than that, and among the samadhis of the path of liberation, whatever samadhi possesses liberation. Among them, the five obscurations are the obscurations to entering into meditative concentration. What are the obscurations that, when entering into meditative concentration, become obscurations? They are the obscuration of desire and longing, malice, drowsiness, sleep, excitement, regret, and the obscuration of doubt. What is desire and longing? Following after the signs of the repulsive, whatever is between desiring to see and desiring to touch the qualities of the five desires, or remembering all that was previously experienced, whatever is the desire to contemplate. What is malice? Depending on disputes with those who practice the same Brahma conduct, or whatever cause of harm and anger is remembered, whatever is the mind's extreme torment, or desiring to harm, whatever is the mind's extreme torment, excessively contemplating and examining that very cause of anger. What is drowsiness? Depending on the deterioration of any of the precepts, etc., or not closing the doors of the senses, or not knowing the measure of food, or sleeping, or abiding without mindfulness, or not practicing abandonment, being in accordance with the arising of all afflictions, whatever is the drowsiness of body and mind, that is, the body and mind are incapable. What is sleep? The mind is manifestly withdrawn, drowsiness is the destruction of the practice of abandonment by generating afflictions, sleep is the destruction of the practice of abandonment by manifestly withdrawing the mind. Therefore, those two are said to be one obscuration, drowsiness because it makes one incapable. Sleep because it makes one drowsy by manifestly withdrawing. Drowsiness is the near cause of how sleep arises, but it is not the same for other afflictions and near afflictions, other afflictions and near afflictions are born.
