Moreover, even if there is no future life, disturbed sleep can lead to the generation of ghosts. What is excitement? It is relying on thoughts of relatives, or thoughts of homeland, or not thinking about death, recalling past laughter, play, joy, and various pleasures. If these are recalled, a state of mind that is not peaceful and wanders arises. What is regret? It is having various thoughts about relatives and so on, thinking: Where can one eat such food and drink such beverages? Those relatives who can obtain such clothes, food, bedding, medicine, and supplies, why did I leave them? Why didn't I go to that place? Why did I leave that place and come here? Or thinking: Why did I ordain so young? If only I could have stayed until old age. Or recalling past laughter, joy, and play, thinking: Why did I ordain when I should have been playing and enjoying myself, associating with adorned places, when my relatives were distrustful, tearful, and crying? Due to such reasons, the mind is always regretful, very regretful, and regret and worry arise. Therefore, excitement and regret have the same basis, so excitement and regret are considered the same kind of obscuration. Furthermore, whether one has done what should be done or what should not be done, or whether one has done it or not, one thinks: I did not do what should have been done, I did what should not have been done. Apart from the initial regret that arises, if one cannot eliminate the entanglement of regret, in later times, the mind's continuum always generates regret, great regret, regret, and worry, this is a type of the obscuration of regret. The regret that arises from an inappropriate place, and the later regret, although they have a different basis from excitement, just as excitement cannot bring peace in a scattered way, so too, this regret cannot bring peace in an unpleasant way.

This was also spoken mixed together with that. What is doubt? Hesitation and doubt about the teacher, or the Dharma, or the teachings, or the subsequent teachings, or realization; or hesitation and doubt about the past time. Like that, that mind which has become hesitation and doubt will not enter into diligence, following, abandonment, and abiding correctly within. Just as with the past, it is the same with the future and what is happening now. Or hesitation and doubt about the truths such as suffering, becoming of two minds, wavering, having two thoughts, and becoming hesitant. Regarding desire, what is the food that obscures desire? There are also attractive things, and improperly attending to them and increasing them. What are those attractive things? They are the best, the sacred, and the wonderful of all desires. If one is not attached to that, then one will not be attached to other inferior things. If one can conquer a great giant, then one will succeed in conquering other giants, just like that. What is that? It is what is contained in the eight attractive aspects that women have. What are those eight aspects by which women bind men? Namely: dancing, singing, laughing, gazing, color, touch, posture, and coquetry. This is the food that generates desire for those who have not generated it, and makes those who have generated it increase. What is not food? There are also unattractive things, and properly attending to them and increasing them. What is that? For example, complete decomposition and so on. That is, individually contemplating this body as being filled with various kinds of impurities. Like that, individually contemplating the unattractiveness of the inner body, and individually contemplating the unattractiveness of the outer body, such as complete decomposition and so on. Unattractiveness is limited to just these two aspects. This is the non-food that does not generate desire for those who have not generated it, and abandons desire for those who have generated it. By attending to this, desire will not arise, and by repeatedly familiarizing oneself with it, one will abandon desire. The dark side, attending to it generates desire, and repeatedly familiarizing oneself with it increases desire.
