Regarding the statement, "This place is indeed a place of abiding," what is the nature of Dharma? What is the abiding of Dharma? What is the realm of Dharma? The answer is: That which has been spoken of since beginningless time is the nature of Dharma. How is it spoken of? It is the distinct establishment with words and letters of reason, that is the abiding of Dharma. Since the cause of that abiding is the nature of Dharma, therefore it is called realm. If it is certain that there is no birth, then who will be born where? Or, even if there is no birth in any way, will there be aging and death due to the cause of birth? Regarding this question, why is self-nature spoken of here as the cause of self-nature? This is because the birth of the fruit is dependent on the seed. The seed of birth is consciousness and so on, up to the limbs that reach feeling, and that is actually birth. If so, then those that later become the fruit are called birth by the cause of existence. Similarly, the remaining limbs that have been shown should also be viewed accordingly. If it is not said that all the limbs are one cause of one, why are name and form and consciousness established as one cause of one? Name and form become the cause of consciousness in this life, and consciousness becomes the cause of name and form in the next life. For example, when uniting in the mother's womb, one becomes the cause of one, therefore, due to the cause of consciousness, in the mother's womb, the form of semen and blood is completely contained by name, mixing into a mushy state. And the consciousness that arises from the cause of that name and form will gain a place to abide there. Why do Bodhisattvas look at the dark side? Consciousness will turn the mind back, but not the other limbs? This is because these two are one cause of one, just as name and form arise from the cause of consciousness, the cause of name and form also produces consciousness, when observing things similar to it, consciousness will turn the mind back, but the other limbs do not turn back in that way, because in some cases, one will become the cause of one.

Because change is seen, it is called cessation. In terms of cessation, name and form are the cause of the cessation of consciousness that leads to rebirth, and therefore they are considered to be different. Why is it said that the limbs are neither self-made, nor made by others, nor made by both, nor born without cause? Because there is no producer, no movement towards conditions, and conditions have power. In dependent origination, what is like the sprout of suffering? What is like completely guarding the sprout of suffering? What is like the tree of suffering? Answer: Consciousness and so on, caused by ignorance and action, up to feeling, are like sprouts. Craving and so on, arising from the condition of feeling, up to existence, should be regarded as completely guarded. Birth and old age and death should be regarded as the tree of suffering. Among the limbs, how many are like the wick of a lamp? Answer: Consciousness and so on up to feeling. Among the limbs, how many are like oil? Answer: Ignorance, action, craving, grasping, and existence. Among the limbs, how many are like a burning flame? Answer: Birth and old age and death. Why is dependent origination called increase by showing the black side? Because the final result will become a pure mass of suffering, and all the limbs have become causes, and the other limbs follow the other limbs. Why is dependent origination called decrease by showing the white side? Because by abandoning the latter, it will be completely reduced, and all the limbs have become the cause of reducing the pure mass of suffering. Among the limbs, how many are called phenomena with causes? Answer: The first seven. Among the limbs, how many are called suffering with causes? Answer: The other five besides that. Among the limbs, how many are completely separated when they cease because the outflows are exhausted? Answer: Three. Among the limbs, how many are completely
