That which I have said, "dependent arising is profound," how should one understand its profundity? Like this: starting from the meaning of impermanence, the meaning of suffering, the meaning of emptiness, and the meaning of selflessness, one should contemplate the profound meaning of dependent arising in ten ways. Among these, starting from the meaning of impermanence, it arises from its own seed, and also relies on other conditions; it arises from other conditions, and also relies on its own seed; it arises from its own seed and other conditions; the seed and conditions, in order to produce it, have no movement, action, or activity whatsoever; the seed and conditions have no movement, action, or activity, but they are not without the power of causality. The limbs are the nature that has been known since beginningless time, and each moment possesses its own distinct nature. Dependent arising is both the nature of instantaneous destruction and also appears as a state of abiding. Among these, starting from the meaning of suffering, the limbs are the nature of being of one taste with suffering, but also appear in three forms. Among these, starting from the meaning of emptiness, the limbs are both separate from sentient beings, agents, and suffering, but also appear and show as if they are not separate from them. Among these, starting from the meaning of selflessness, the limbs are both the nature of being without autonomy and without self, but also appear as the nature of having a self. In terms of ultimate truth, it is the nature of being inexpressible, but speech also reveals its nature. With how many kinds of wisdom should one understand dependent arising? With two kinds of wisdom: understanding the abiding of dharma and understanding its reality. How should one understand with the wisdom of understanding the abiding of dharma? One should understand it as the Blessed One has established and taught it. How should one understand with the wisdom of understanding its reality? One should understand it as those who have seen the basis of learning see it as a profound meaning. Dependent arising is not made by me, nor is it made by others; whether the Tathagatas appear or do not appear, it is the nature of dharma, the abiding of dharma, and the limit of dharma.
