M. Then, are the other limbs also like that? Ignorance is also the cause of old age and death and so on, because it is a very close cause. Therefore, it is only shown as the cause of the formations. The remaining limbs should also be viewed accordingly, as appropriate. The lower limbs do not become the cause of the upper ones. Why? Because in order to abandon the lower ones, one strives to abandon the upper ones, because abandoning it will lead to abandoning the lower ones, but one does not abandon the lower ones in order to abandon the upper ones. Therefore, it should be observed that those themselves are the cause of those. Why is it said, "Because this exists, this arises"? Because from the unabandoned cause, something different from it arises. Why is it said, "Because this is born, this is born"? Because from the impermanent cause, something different from it arises. Why is it said that if there is birth, there will be old age and death, and that old age and death are caused by birth? Between ignorance and formations, this way of speaking should also be applied, because from the inactive cause, something different from it arises. Why is it said that if there is birth, there will be old age and death, and that old age and death are caused by birth, and not by others? Similarly, between ignorance and formations, this way of speaking should also be applied, because by the cause existing in one's own continuum, in one's own continuum itself, something different from it arises. Are the phenomena that arise from the cause of ignorance also the formations? Or, are the formations also those that arise from the cause of ignorance? The formations are, but there are also those that do not arise from the cause of ignorance, namely, the uncontaminated, and the unobscured and unspecified bodily, verbal, and mental formations. There are also those that arise from the cause of ignorance, but are not formations, namely, the limbs of existence other than the limb of existence included by the formations. There are also those that arise from the cause of ignorance and are also formations, namely, the meritorious, non-meritorious, and unwavering bodily, verbal, and mental formations. Apart from those kinds?

The fourth case is: Thus, this is divided into four cases. Is the consciousness (རྣམ་པར་ཤེས་པ་) that arises from the condition of formation (འདུ་བྱེད་) also the same? Or, is whatever is consciousness (རྣམ་པར་ཤེས་པ་) and whatever arises from the condition of formation (འདུ་བྱེད་) the same? If asked thus, there are also things that arise from the condition of formation (འདུ་བྱེད་) that are not consciousness (རྣམ་པར་ཤེས་པ་), namely, the other limbs of existence besides consciousness (རྣམ་པར་ཤེས་པ་). There is consciousness (རྣམ་པར་ཤེས་པ་), but it does not arise from the condition of formation (འདུ་བྱེད་), namely, whatever is uncontaminated and unobscured and unindicated, except for what arises from maturation. If it is both consciousness (རྣམ་པར་ཤེས་པ་) and arises from the condition of formation (འདུ་བྱེད་), then it is the consciousness (རྣམ་པར་ཤེས་པ་) that has become the seed of rebirth and has become the fruit. Apart from these cases, it is the fourth case. Similarly, the division into four cases from the condition of contact (རེག་པ་) to feeling (ཚོར་བ་) should also be examined appropriately. Are all those that arise from the condition of feeling Or, are all those that are craving (སྲེད་པ་) arising from the condition of feeling (ཚོར་བ་)? If asked thus, here also there is a division into four cases: It is craving (སྲེད་པ་), but it does not arise from the condition of feeling (ཚོར་བ་), namely, the desire for higher liberation and, relying on virtuous craving (སྲེད་པ་), abandoning existence (སྲིད་པ་). What arises from the condition of feeling (ཚོར་བ་) is not craving (སྲེད་པ་), namely, relying on the feeling (ཚོར་བ་) that arises from the gathering of contact (རེག་པ་), whatever other dharmas arise from that, and whatever other limbs of existence there are. What arises from the condition of feeling (ཚོར་བ་) and is also craving (སྲེད་པ་) is afflicted craving (སྲེད་པ་), namely, what arises from the condition of feeling (ཚོར་བ་) that arises from the gathering of ignorance and contact (རེག་པ་). Apart from these cases, it is the fourth case. Are all those that arise from the condition of craving Or, are all those that are grasping (ལེན་པ་) arising from the condition of craving (སྲེད་པ་)? If asked thus, the latter statement should be considered, that is, all that is grasping (ལེན་པ་) arises from the condition of craving (སྲེད་པ་). There are also things that arise from the condition of existence (སྲིད་པ་) that are not grasping (ལེན་པ་), namely, the other limbs of existence besides grasping (ལེན་པ་), and virtuous
