, and generating faults in this life and the next, and the mental suffering and discomfort arising from that, will be experienced. If you think of harming yourself, then when harming sentient beings, from that basis, you yourself will be killed, or bound, or harmed, or degraded, but you cannot harm others. If you think of harming others, then doing so will harm others, but from that basis, you yourself will not be killed or degraded. Harming both, then doing so will also harm others, and from that basis, others will be killed or degraded. If you want to generate faults in this life, it is like thinking of harming yourself. If you want to generate faults in the next life, it is like thinking of harming others. If you want to generate faults in this life and the next, it is like thinking of harming both. If you want to experience mental suffering and discomfort arising from that, then when harming sentient beings, if the six faults do not occur, and the killing is not accomplished as desired, then from the basis of frustrated desire, the mental suffering and discomfort arising from that will be experienced. Furthermore, ten faults will arise, as it says in the sutra in the chapter on broken vows, which should be understood in detail. Furthermore, in the precepts of a layperson, regarding the four paths of unwholesome actions, and the fifth, namely the case of grain alcohol and mixed alcohol, those faults spoken of by the Blessed One, should also be understood in detail as it says in the 'Joyful Sutra'. What is the all-pervasive affliction of birth? That should be viewed in four ways: differentiation, suffering, uncertainty, and entering. Among these, the differentiation of birth is: the differentiation of realms (Sanskrit: dhātu), the differentiation of destinations, the differentiation of other places, the differentiation of lineages, and the differentiation of bodies in the world should be understood. Among these, the differentiation of realms is:

Living in the desire realm, living in the form realm, and the birth of living in the formless realm. The various distinctions of destinies are the five kinds of birth in the five destinies. The various distinctions of places are thirty-six other places in the desire realm, eighteen in the form realm, and four other places in the formless realm, totaling fifty-eight births. The various distinctions of lineage are that in the desire realm, people are born into inferior lineages among humans. For example, some are born into the lineage of Chandalas, or the lineage of butchers, or the lineage of cartwrights, or the lineage of bamboo workers, or any other lineage that is base, lowly, evil, with poor living, small, with scarce food, drink, and enjoyment. Being born into such lineages is like that, and these people are called people without fortune. Being born into noble lineages is like this: for example, some are born into the Kshatriya lineage, like a great Sala tree, or the Brahmin lineage, like a great Sala tree, or the householder lineage, like a great Sala tree, or any other lineage that is rich, with much wealth, great enjoyment, many possessions, with many servants and good circumstances, with much wealth, grain, and storehouses. Being born into such lineages is like that, and these people are called people with fortune. Being born into a lineage that is neither inferior nor noble is like this: for example, some are born into intermediate lineages that are neither the former nor the latter. Alternatively, the gods who live in the desire realm have three kinds of birth: being born among the Asuras, being born relying on the earth, and being born relying on the palaces of the sky. In the form realm, there are three kinds of birth: being born with the perception of individual beings, being born without perception, and being born in the Pure Abodes. In the formless realm, there are three kinds of birth: being born among the gods of infinite consciousness, being born in the realm of nothingness, and being born among the gods of neither perception nor non-perception.

For example. Regarding the various distinctions of bodies in the world: In the immeasurable realms of the ten directions, it should be understood that the births of immeasurable sentient beings are also immeasurable. Such suffering, the Blessed One said this: 'The water of the four great oceans combined is less than the blood that you have shed flowing through samsara for a long time.' Why is that? Because for a long time you have been born together with elephants, horses, female donkeys, cows, donkeys, goats, deer, buffaloes, pigs, dogs, etc., and there you have experienced countless sufferings of dismembering your body, therefore much blood has flowed. Just as being born together with elephants etc., it is the same among humans, where you have experienced countless sufferings for the sake of fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, the loss of relatives and friends, the exhaustion of wealth, the exhaustion of enjoyment, etc., therefore many tears have flowed. Just as with blood and tears, the mother's milk that has been drunk should also be regarded as the same. Similar to this, it should be understood that these are the various distinctions of the suffering of birth. Regarding uncertainty, the Blessed One said this: 'For example, all the grass, trees, branches, leaves, and young leaves that are on this earth, people cut them into pieces the size of four fingers, and then arrange them to trace the lineage of fathers and mothers, saying: 'This is my father.' 'My father's father is this.' 'This is my mother.' 'My mother's mother is this.' In this way, the pieces the size of four fingers will be used up very quickly in this way, but I will not say that the end of the father's father and the end of the mother's mother will be reached. The suffering, extreme suffering, and displeasure that you sentient beings experience
