If it turns into afflictions, it is because it has made the basis of complete entanglement, and it promotes suffering such as birth. Furthermore, it should be known that all afflictions are seen through the seven doors, and they hinder meditation and become obstacles. That is: inverted understanding, not understanding, neither understanding nor not understanding, accomplishing invertedly with inverted understanding, and its basic place, and it generates fear, and naturally acts universally. Eighth fascicle. If you ask, how to recognize the characteristics of great afflictions, the characteristics of fierceness, and the characteristics of heaviness? In short, there are six ways: falling, birth, continuity, basis, initiating karma, and finally. Among them, falling refers to any complete entanglement of afflictions, from which all falls will occur. Among them, birth refers to acting in desire or becoming an evil destiny. Among them, continuity refers to those who are in their prime and whose senses are fully mature, who practice desire and so on, and who are not completely liberated from suffering. Among them, the basis refers to focusing on the place of the guru, focusing on the place of merit, and focusing on the place that should not be entered. Among them, initiating karma refers to any complete entanglement of afflictions, which overwhelms and completely occupies the mind, thereby initiating the karma of body and speech. Among them, the ultimate is the generalization that is dominant in nature, which means that it will be eliminated by small antidotes at first. Inversion refers to these seven ways, namely: inverted perception, inverted view, inverted mind, the inversion of thinking of permanence in impermanence, the inversion of thinking of happiness in suffering, the inversion of thinking of purity in impurity, and the inversion of thinking of self in non-self. What is inverted perception? It is the complete distinction of thinking of permanence in impermanence, thinking of happiness in suffering, thinking of purity in impurity, and thinking of self in non-self.

What is perversion? It is the complete discrimination of consciousness itself. Likewise, what are patience, desire, distinction, and attachment? What is the perversion of mind? It is the complete affliction of attachment itself, caused by desire and so forth. Therefore, afflictions should be understood in three ways: Afflictions also have the root of perversion. There are also causes similar to perversion. Among them, the root of perversion is ignorance. Perversion is the view of the perishable aggregate, and one aspect of the view of clinging to extremes, as well as the view of holding views as supreme, the view of holding moral discipline and asceticism as supreme, and desire. The causes similar to perversion are wrong views, and one aspect of the view of clinging to extremes, as well as anger, pride, and doubt. Among them, the view of the perishable aggregate is the perversion of thinking that there is a self in what is without self. One aspect of the view of clinging to extremes is the perversion of thinking that what is impermanent is permanent. The view of holding views as supreme is the perversion of mind of thinking that what is impure is pure. The view of holding moral discipline and asceticism as supreme is the perversion of thinking that what is suffering is happiness. Desire is both the perversion of thinking that what is impure is pure, and the perversion of thinking that what is suffering is happiness. What are the categories of afflictions? There are many categories, such as: all bonds, fetters, latent tendencies, near afflictions, all entanglements, rivers, combinations, near grasping, knots, veils, husks, stains, sins, arrows, tethers, roots, misdeeds, outflows, poverty, complete burning, disturbances, conflicts, fires, plagues, forest combinations, obstacles, and those similar to these are the categories of afflictions. Among them, because suffering causes everything to combine, it is everything combined.

These are the afflictions. Because one cannot do as one pleases with virtuous conduct, they are bonds. Because they possess the seeds of all worldly increase, they are latent tendencies. Because inverted thoughts cause the mind to be close to affliction, they are near afflictions. Because they arise again and again, continuously and universally, they are universal entanglements. Because they are unfathomable and cause one to continuously flow towards samsara, they are rivers. Because they are the means of wrong practice, they are connections. Because they continuously grasp the body, they are grasping. Because they are difficult to untie, they are knots. Because they obscure the meaning of just that, they are obscurations. Because they become the barren land of the field of virtuous crops, they are barren lands. Because their nature is completely afflicted, they are defilements. Because they constantly harm, they are sins. Because they are of an unpacified nature and have continued for a long time, they are thorns. Because they are the cause of completely grasping the aggregates, they are complete grasping. Because they become the basis of non-virtue, they are roots. Because they are the nature of wrong conduct, they are misdeeds. Because they cause the mind to be distracted, they are outflows. Because they are content with enjoyment, they are poverty. Because desire makes one poor, they are complete torment. Because they bring about decline, they are disturbances. Because they are the cause of strife, fault-finding, arguments, and debates, they are struggles. Because they burn the firewood of all accumulated roots of virtue, they are flames. Because they become great sickness, they are plagues. Because they cause the body to accomplish various kinds of trees, they are forest combinations. Because they are attached to the qualities of desire and obstruct the attainment of transmundane Dharma, they are obstacles. These are the names of all afflictions. The Blessed One mainly established these afflictions as these names. Universal connections refer to the nine universal connections, namely the universal connection of attachment, and the rest as described before. Bonds refer to the three bonds, namely desire and hatred.
