Is purification achieved through reversed practices, or is it believed to be achieved through the correct practice of bodily virtues, etc.? If purification is achieved through reversed practices, then reversed practices would also be a practice, and purification would also be a result, which should not be the case. If purification is achieved through correct practice, then the asceticism of dogs, etc., would become meaningless, as it would not lead to purification. Therefore, neither separation from desire nor non-separation from desire, neither internal nor external, neither taking impure things nor taking pure things, neither reversed nor correct practices can achieve the goal. Therefore, this statement does not arise from reason. What is the statement of auspiciousness and good fortune? For example, some ascetics or Brahmins observe and say: The sun, moon, constellations, and different dates do not make wishes come true, but only when they are in harmony do wishes come true. Therefore, they worship the sun, etc., for this purpose, perform fire offerings, recitations, place flourishing grass, full vases, wood-apple fruits, conch shells, etc., like astrologers. Why do they observe and speak in this way? Because they do so based on scripture and reason. The scripture is as before. What is reason? For example, some are logicians, which is the same as before. They have attained worldly meditations and are revered as Arhats by a large assembly of beings. Those who desire wealth and prosperity ask them questions, but they do not understand the correct way of dependent origination, and only by observing the movements of the sun, moon, constellations, and dates, they see the ripening of the fruits of good and bad deeds of sentient beings, and then declare and explain to those sentient beings who desire wealth that it is caused by those factors. Therefore, it should be said: Do the sun, moon, constellations, and dates cause wealth and decline? Or is it good

It is considered to be caused by virtuous and non-virtuous actions. If it is said to be caused by the sun and so on, then it seems that the prosperity and decline of virtuous and non-virtuous actions caused by it will continue until the end of life, which is not acceptable. If it is said to be caused by virtuous and non-virtuous actions, then it cannot be said to be caused by the sun and so on. In this way, what is caused by the sun and so on, and what is caused by virtuous and non-virtuous actions, are also not acceptable. Therefore, this statement is also illogical. In this way, these sixteen proponents of other schools, if carefully examined with two kinds of reasoning for investigation, are unacceptable in every way. What, then, is the establishment of all-pervasive afflictions? That is to be recognized as three kinds of all-pervasive afflictions. What are these? The all-pervasive affliction of afflictions, the all-pervasive affliction of actions, and the all-pervasive affliction of birth. What is the all-pervasive affliction of afflictions? In summary: nature and difference, cause and time-place-gate, weight and reversal, names and faults. One must also recognize the nature of the all-pervasive affliction of afflictions. Difference, cause, time-place, gate, weight, the summary of reversal, names, and faults must also be recognized. What is the nature of afflictions? When any dharma arises, its nature also arises with the characteristic of non-pacification, and when it arises, the continuum of actions also enters into complete non-pacification. It should be recognized that the nature of afflictions is limited to this alone. What is the difference of afflictions? There is one kind of affliction, which is the meaning of all-pervasive affliction. There are also two kinds, namely, what is to be abandoned by seeing and what is to be abandoned by meditation. There are also three kinds, namely, associated with the desire realm, associated with the form realm, and associated with the formless realm. There are also four kinds, namely, the determinate associated with the desire realm, the indeterminate, the indeterminate associated with the form realm, and the indeterminate associated with the formless realm. There are also five kinds.

Because suffering is seen, it should be abandoned; because arising is seen, it should be abandoned; because cessation is seen, it should be abandoned; because the path is seen, it should be abandoned; because of meditation, it should be abandoned. The six are desire, anger, pride, ignorance, view, and doubt. The seven are the seven latent predispositions: the latent predisposition of desire for desire, the latent predisposition of anger, the latent predisposition of desire for existence, the latent predisposition of pride, the latent predisposition of ignorance, the latent predisposition of view, and the latent predisposition of doubt. The eight are desire, anger, pride, ignorance, doubt, view, and two kinds of clinging. The nine are the nine bonds: the bond of attachment, the bond of anger, the bond of pride, the bond of ignorance, the bond of view, the bond of clinging, the bond of doubt, the bond of jealousy, and the bond of stinginess. The ten are the view of the perishable aggregate, the view of holding to extremes, wrong view, holding views as supreme, moral discipline, holding asceticism as supreme, desire, anger, pride, ignorance, and doubt. These ten kinds of afflictions, when wrongly applied to the twelve truths, transform into one hundred and twenty-eight afflictions. What are the twelve truths? The truth of suffering experienced in the desire realm, the truth of arising, the truth of suffering experienced in the form realm, the truth of arising, the truth of suffering experienced in the formless realm, the truth of arising, the power of experience in the desire realm, the result of fully knowing them, the truth of cessation that is well distinguished by fully knowing them, the truth of the path, the power of experience in the form realm, the result of fully knowing them, the truth of cessation that is well distinguished by fully knowing them, the truth of the path, the power of experience in the formless realm.
