They are the Brahmins. Why do they look and speak like that? Because it is based on scriptural authority and reasoning. The scriptural authority is as before. What is the reasoning? Like this, here some are तर्कཔ་ (Sanskrit Devanagari: तर्कपा, Sanskrit Romanization: tarkapa, meaning: speculators), starting from "are speculators" and elaborating, because of the Brahmin caste, adherence to the precepts of nature, gain, and respect. To this, it should be said: Are only the other castes besides those born from mothers and from wombs? Or does it also include the Brahmin caste? If it is only the other castes besides those, then it would be openly slandering the Brahmin caste as being born from wombs and from mothers, which is not right. If the Brahmin caste is also like that, then it cannot be said that the Brahmins are श्रेष्ठ (Sanskrit Devanagari: श्रेष्ठ, Sanskrit Romanization: shreshtha, meaning: the best) of castes, and other castes are inferior. Just as being born from wombs and from mothers, doing unwholesome deeds and doing wholesome deeds, acting wrongly with body, speech, and mind, and acting rightly with body, speech, and mind, experiencing unpleasantness and experiencing the fruits of pleasantness in this life, being born in the lower realms in the next life and being born among the gods in the heavens of the good realms, from any of the three manifested places, from wherever, being born in the mother's womb, being skilled or unskilled in worldly crafts and occupations, being a king or his woodcutter, being skilled and able to accomplish, or being selected or not selected as a king's attendant, having the nature of sickness, having the nature of aging, having the nature of death, cultivating the abodes of Brahma and being born in the Brahma realm, cultivating or not cultivating the dharmas of the aspects of enlightenment, attaining or not attaining the enlightenment of the Hearers, the enlightenment of the Solitary Buddhas, and the unsurpassed perfect complete enlightenment is also the same. Is that which is superior only because of the difference in जन्मस्थान (Sanskrit Devanagari: जन्मस्थान, Sanskrit Romanization: janmasthana, meaning: place of birth) the best? Or does it also include learning and discipline? If it is considered only by place of birth, then for sacrificial offerings, learning is primary and discipline is primary.

It is not right to consider whatever is of noble birth as completely correct. If one likes it because of hearing or discipline, then it is not right to say that Brahmins are the most excellent of castes and other castes are inferior. Thus, place of birth, action, birth, craft, place of work, master, selection by that, abode of Brahma, cultivation of the aspects of enlightenment, realization of enlightenment, hearing, and differences in discipline are also not right. Therefore, this statement is not produced by reason either. What is pure speech? For example, here some renunciates or Brahmins, because I am liberated, and also have obtained mastery over the mind, and also have obtained mastery over yoga, possessing and endowed with the five desirable qualities of the gods, playing and enjoying happily, at that time, just by this, one becomes pure by the purity of obtaining nirvana, or because one is separated from desires, separated from sinful and unwholesome dharmas, with investigation and analysis, possessing joy and happiness born of separation, cultivating and abiding in the first dhyana, and even cultivating and abiding in the fourth dhyana, at that time, just by this, one becomes pure by the purity of obtaining the supreme nirvana, like observing in this way, like speaking in that way.

Explanation: The scriptural authority is as before. What is the reasoning? Like this, some here are logicians, starting from "is" and elaborating, they all think they are masters, having obtained power, being masters of desire and masters of yoga. But they do not truly understand mastery and power as they are. Like this, some here think that just as one is liberated from wrongdoing, if one punishes oneself, one will be completely liberated from sin. To this, one should say: One who delights in the five desirable qualities, is he free from desire, or does he think he is not free from desire? If he is said to be free from desire, then it cannot be said that he delights, rejoices, and enjoys pleasure. If he is said not to be free from desire, then it cannot be said that he is liberated and pure. If one cultivates and abides up to the fourth dhyana, is he free from desire, or does he think he is not free from desire? If he is said to be completely free from desire, then it cannot be said that he cultivates and abides up to the fourth dhyana. If he is said not to be free from desire, then it cannot be said that he is liberated and pure. To this, one should also say: Does he think of inner purity or outer purity? If he thinks of inner purity, then it cannot be said that bathing by the water's edge will make one completely pure. If he thinks of outer purity, then it cannot be said that while having desire, hatred, and delusion, removing outer dirt will make one completely pure. Does one become pure by taking a pure object, or does one think one becomes pure by taking an impure object? If one thinks one becomes pure by taking a pure object, then it cannot be said that dogs and the like are considered impure in the world, and taking them will make one pure. If one thinks one becomes pure by taking an impure object, then it cannot be said that an object that is impure by nature will become pure. If one takes up the conduct of dogs and the like, one will commit bodily misdeeds.
