Therefore, one refutes the inconsistencies with words. These statements, regarding cause, person, and refutation, abide in the very place of fear, as stated in the sutras. These have been explained as they are. If the opponents think, 'If the opponents come, we will cover it up there,' then know that this thought is a mistake here. Therefore, this statement is not produced by reason either. What is the assertion of no cause? It has two aspects, namely, relying on meditation and relying on speculation. It should be understood as it is stated in the sutras themselves. Why is it that, relying on speculation, one sees that self and the world arise from no cause? In short, without prior thought, limitless inner and outer objects appear in various forms, sometimes causes appear without results, sometimes wind suddenly arises and sometimes does not, sometimes rivers suddenly flood and sometimes do not, sometimes trees suddenly produce flowers and fruits and sometimes do not, and so on. Therefore, one should say this: Do you remember something that does not exist? Or do you remember the self? If you remember something that does not exist, then it is not right to say that you remember something that does not exist, which you have not become accustomed to and are not familiar with. If you remember the self, then it is also not right to say that the self did not exist before and came into existence later. Do you consider the body and external objects appearing in various forms and appearing suddenly to be without cause, or do you consider them to have a cause? If they are without cause, then appearing in various forms, appearing suddenly, and also not appearing are not possible. If they have a cause, then it is not right to say that the self and the world are born from no cause. Therefore, remembering something that does not exist, remembering the self, and inner and outer objects appearing in various forms without cause, and also appearing in various forms with cause, are not possible. Therefore, this statement is not produced by reason either.
