I and the world are permanent, not made, not made by what is made, not transformed, not made by what is transformed, cannot be killed, constantly abide, abide steadfastly like a life-force, thus they hold. This is how it is: those who speak of permanence, and some who hold to permanence, those who speculate on the past extreme, and those who speculate on the future extreme, who say that there is consciousness, and those who say that there is no consciousness, and those who say that there is no consciousness, and those who say that there is neither consciousness nor non-consciousness. Or some hold that atoms are permanent. Why are I and the world permanent? Why do they look and speak like that? The reason for this should be understood as it appears in this very sutra, as appropriate. Among them, those who speculate on the past extreme rely on small, medium, and large meditations. By remembering past abodes, they speculate on the past extreme in past times. Those who are unskilled in dependent origination, who do not know the past actions as they are, even in mere recollection, those arise to view. Or, relying on the divine eye, they speculate on the past extreme in the present time. Those who do not know that actions perish in an instant and then follow, and those who constantly focus on the continuum of consciousness from this world to the next, those arise to view. They focus on Brahma accomplishing what he has thought in his mind, and they focus on the transformation of the great elements, and they focus on the transformation of consciousness, and at the future extreme, they see the difference between consciousness and feeling, but they do not see the difference in their nature, those arise to view. Therefore, they think, "I and the world are permanent." Those who hold atoms to be permanent rely on worldly meditation. Because they do not know dependent origination as it really is, they view it like this: if things go first, then the fruits of things accumulate and arise, and if diminution goes first, then they discern destruction. Therefore, they think, "Atoms

Gross matter arises from minute particles, and when gross matter is broken down, it exists in the state of minute particles. Therefore, it is thought that gross matter is impermanent, while minute particles are permanent. In this regard, those who view permanence are attached to the extreme of the past, and those who are attached to the extreme of the future are included by individual characteristics. Therefore, by refuting the assertion of a self, the assertion of individual characteristics of a self will also be refuted. Furthermore, in this regard, it should be stated as follows: Is the recollection of past states grasping at the aggregates, or is it considered to be grasping at a self? If it is grasping at the aggregates, then it cannot be said that the self and the world are permanent. If it is grasping at a self, then it cannot be elaborately stated that those beings are such and such, that my name there is such and such, and that they have become of this lineage. If, with form as the object, eye consciousness manifests and only connects with the object of form, then with regard to those other arranged objects, do other consciousnesses cease or enter? If it is thought that they cease, then it cannot be said that the cessation of consciousness is permanent. If they enter, then one object would cause all consciousnesses to enter at all times, which is not possible. Is it through perception or feeling that you think there is change in the self, or not? If there is change, then it cannot be said that the self and the world are permanent. If there is no change, then it cannot be said that having become a single perception, it will become various perceptions, small perceptions, and limitless perceptions. Nor can it be said that having become definitely happy, it will become definitely painful, and neither happy nor unhappy. In this regard, some people view that the life is the body, and this is viewing the self as having form. Some people view that the life is other and the body is other, and this is viewing the self as not having form. Some people view the self as both parts, as exhaustive and non-dual, and as complete, and this is viewing the self as neither having form
