Having exhausted the lifespan, one passes away, which is called dying when the time comes. What is it like to exhaust merit? For example, some people die because they lack resources. Furthermore, what is it like to not abandon self-grasping? The Blessed One has also said, 'To die before the end of one's lifespan, there are nine causes and nine conditions.' What are the nine? Eating food without moderation, eating unsuitable food, eating without digesting, not expelling accumulated undigested food, suppressing maturation, not relying on separate medicines, being accustomed to, not understanding what one is not accustomed to, going at an inappropriate time, and engaging in impure conduct. This is called dying untimely. What is it like to pass away with a virtuous mind? For example, some people, at the time of death, remember the virtuous dharmas they have previously cultivated, or others may remind them. At that time, whatever virtuous dharmas, such as faith, arise in their minds, continue until coarse consciousness arises. When subtle consciousness arises, the virtuous mind ceases, and abides in an unspecified mind. In this way, at that time, they are neither able to focus on the virtuous deeds they have previously practiced, nor can others remind them. What is it like to pass away with an unvirtuous mind? For example, some people, at the time of death, remember the unvirtuous dharmas they have previously cultivated, or others may remind them. At that time, whatever unvirtuous dharmas, such as attachment, arise in their minds, continue until coarse consciousness arises. All of this is the same as the previous case of virtue. Therefore, if one dies with a virtuous mind, one will die peacefully, and at the time of death, their body will not experience intense suffering. If one dies with an unvirtuous mind, one will die in suffering, and at the time of death, their body will experience intense suffering. For one who dies with a virtuous mind, the forms they see will not be distorted. For one who dies with an unvirtuous mind, the forms

It will be confusing and mistaken. If one dies with a mind that has not been foretold, what is it like? Whether one does good or evil, or does not do it, one does not remember oneself, or others do not cause one to remember. It is neither a virtuous mind nor an afflicted mind, then at the time of death, one will not die with a happy death, nor will one die with a painful death. Furthermore, if a person who does good or evil dies, does he himself remember the virtuous and non-virtuous dharmas that he has previously practiced, or may others cause him to remember? At that time, whatever he has practiced many times will become the most powerful, it will cause the mind to focus on it, and the others will be forgotten. Furthermore, if one has practiced both equally, then which of them is remembered first? That which is caused to be remembered will not change, nor will it enter into others. At that time, he controls two causes, namely the cause of clearly liking elaboration, and the cause of virtuous and non-virtuous actions. Having experienced the fruit thrown by previous actions, at the time of death, a person who does evil deeds will experience here the premonitions of the unpleasant results of the evil deeds he has done before. For example, like in a dream, many unpleasant images will appear to him. The Blessed One thought of this and said that a person who has previously committed and accumulated sinful non-virtuous deeds, at the time of death, will descend like the shadows of mountains or mountain peaks in the evening, and will descend even more and more clearly. One should know that person is like going from light to darkness. Conversely, the fruit of previous evil deeds, now doing good here, should be known as going from darkness to light. The difference is that at the time of death, dream-like images will appear to him, not unpleasant images, but various pleasant images. For those who do great evil, those unpleasant signs

Seeing causes dust to arise, and hair grows in the pores. Actions such as moving legs and feet occur, and urine and feces are produced. Aspiring to the sky, not turning back, foam appears in the mouth, and similar phenomena will occur. If one acts moderately, some of these will occur, and some will not, but it will not be fully realized. All of these, at the time of death, before the moment when consciousness becomes unclear, from a long time, attachment to the habitual self will fully arise. After that, thinking that the lord of that place of power will disappear, one becomes very happy with the body, which is the basis for the manifest accomplishment of the intermediate state of existence. For those who have entered the stream and those who return once, attachment to the self will also fully arise at that time, but those who have entered the stream or return once will examine and examine that attachment to the self with the ground of wisdom and manifestly abandon it, not accepting it. For example, a very strong person, when competing in strength with a very weak person, strikes the weak person. In this case, it should be viewed in the same way. For those who do not return, attachment to the self will not fully arise at that time. The key point here is that it exists in all places of birth other than the hell realm and the realm of the gods. There are also two types: very severe and very mild. For those who do evil deeds, it is very severe. For those who do good deeds, it is very mild. The sound of Uttarakuru is unpleasant, and everything is mild. Those who die and transfer from the Form Realm die at a time when the senses are complete. Those who die and transfer from the Desire Realm, some die and transfer when the senses are complete, and some die and transfer when the senses are impaired. The death of those who are pure and liberated is called the death of subdued transference. The death of those who are not pure and not liberated is called the death of unsubdued transference. Therefore,
