These are us. The difference in the aspect of mind and seed is as before. What is the object? It refers to tangible objects that are invisible and obstructive, such as earth, water, fire, wind, lightness, heaviness, softness, roughness, cold, hunger, thirst, satiety, strength, weakness, disease, old age, death, itching, fainting, slipping, fatigue, rest, flabbiness, good complexion, and many similar tangible objects. Furthermore, one should experience touch that is pleasant, painful, or neutral. Among these, tangible objects, touch, the place of touch, roughness, wetness, motion, warmth, and so on are categories. The realm of bodily activity, the object of the body, the realm of activity of bodily consciousness, the object of bodily consciousness, the object of bodily consciousness, the realm of activity of mental consciousness, the object of mental consciousness, and the object of mental consciousness are categories. Friends and actions should be understood as before. Among these, even if the eye is completely intact and the form has appeared, if the attention that arises from it is not close at hand, then the eye consciousness that arises from it will not arise. Thus, even if the eye is completely intact and the form has appeared, and the attention that arises from it is close at hand, then the eye consciousness that arises from it will arise. Just as with eye consciousness, the consciousnesses of ear, nose, tongue, and body should also be observed in the same way. Among these, when eye consciousness arises, the three types of mind—arising from close proximity, seeking, and determining—become objects in sequence. Among these, the first is eye consciousness itself. The second is mental consciousness. Among these, from the determining mind onwards, one should observe whether it becomes completely defiled or purified. Thereafter, the eye of the same cause as that

Consciousness, too, will arise as virtuous and non-virtuous, but not under the control of one's own conceptualization. As long as the mind is not distracted to other things, both the consciousness of the mind and the consciousness of the eye will become virtuous or afflicted. When the consciousness of the eye arises, it should be understood in the same way up to the consciousness of the body. In this regard, the place should be regarded as a vehicle for going to another place. These five aggregates of consciousness, friends, are like guests traveling together. The object is like the purpose of work. Action is like one's own ability. In another way, their place should be regarded as a house where one lives. The object is like enjoyment. Friends are like servants and maids, and so on. Action is like effort. From the perspective of the yogic practitioner's ground, this is the first ground corresponding to the collection of the five consciousnesses. What is the ground of mind? It should be viewed only from five aspects: nature, place, object, friend, and action. Among these, what is nature? It is what is mind, intellect, and consciousness. What is mind? It is what is the storehouse consciousness (ālaya-vijñāna) that possesses all seeds, has become the object of place, dwells as the object of place, and gathers what takes and ripens. What is intellect? It is what is the immediately ceased collection of the six consciousnesses, and the afflicted intellect that is always associated with the four afflictions of nature—ignorance, view of self, pride of 'I', and craving. What is consciousness? It is what abides closely by discriminating the object. What is place? It is the immediately preceding place of the mind, and like before, the place of seeds as the storehouse consciousness that possesses all seeds. What is the object? All phenomena are objects, namely, merely the aggregate of feeling, the aggregate of perception, the aggregate of formation, the unconditioned, the invisible and unobstructed form, the six sense bases, and all seeds. What is a friend? For example, attention and contact.

That is, in one object there are many aspects, each arising simultaneously, necessarily arising from its own seed, equally associated, having characteristics, having objects, having places. What is the function? It is the first function to distinguish the objects of oneself and others. It also distinguishes the nature of self and common characteristics. It also distinguishes the past, future, and present times. It also distinguishes the cause by the moment. It also enters and follows the virtuous and non-virtuous dharmas and karmas. Moreover, it holds the desirable and undesirable fruits of other aggregates of consciousness other than these, that is, arising from that cause, for the sake of arousing similar causes. Furthermore, among the other aggregates of consciousness other than these, the function that becomes special in all of everything is: distinguishing the object, thinking closely about the object, making intoxicated, making mad, making sleep, making awake, making faint, from fainting waking up, enabling the actions of body and speech to proceed, causing detachment from desire, causing detachment from desire
