not observable, and observable and not observable. The present also has twelve characteristics: the fruit is completely separated, the body is born, it has conditions, it is similar to being born, it is momentary, it has the nature of not being born, it has all defilements, it has complete purification, it is pleasing, it is displeasing, it is observable, and it is not observable. It should also be known that the past has twelve characteristics: the cause has passed, the condition has passed, the fruit has passed, the body is destroyed, it has the nature of cessation, it has the nature of not being born, all defilements are completely pacified, complete purification is completely pacified, like a seen place, like a non-seen place, observable, and not observable. What is it that speaks of self? For example, here some ascetics or Brahmins think like this: among these non-Buddhist heretics, there is a self or sentient being, or life, or a producer, or a nourisher, or a person, or an individual, or a person, etc., that truly exists. They see and speak like this. Why do they see and speak like this? Because they do so through scripture and reasoning. Among them, scripture is just like before. What is reasoning? For example, here some people are called reasoners and debaters, and so on, just like before. Because they do not use wisdom in advance, they observe that the mind of sentient beings enters into existence, and they observe the behavior after using wisdom in advance. Through these two ways, they think like this: if it is determined that there is no self, then when seeing five things, the five things will become the reason for the mind to enter into self. If one sees a shape, only the mind of the shape will enter, not the mind of a sentient being. If one sees actions mixed with pleasure and pain, only the mind of feeling etc. will enter, not the mind of sentient beings with high and low status. If one sees actions with names and related to names, only the mind of recognition will enter, not the mind of royalty, Brahmins, Vaishyas, or Shudras.

Is it so? Is it given by the Buddha? Virtuous spiritual friend, this is the lineage into which the wisdom of sentient beings enters. If one sees formations (saṃskāra) related to virtuous and non-virtuous actions, this is the lineage into which only the wisdom of formations enters. Children and wise people, this is the lineage into which the wisdom of sentient beings enters. If one sees consciousness entering an object, this is the lineage into which only the wisdom of sentient beings enters. I think that things like "I see" are the lineage into which the wisdom of sentient beings enters. Thus, without first applying wisdom, for these five things, in five ways, only the wisdom of sentient beings will enter, and the wisdom of formations will not enter. Therefore, without first applying wisdom, when he sees the object into which the wisdom of sentient beings enters, he thinks like this: I think there is a self. He thinks like this: If it is certain that there is no self, my eyes will see the forms. Seen. Already seen. Or will not see, like this, having first applied the manifest formations, this is the lineage of focusing on the behavior of wisdom going ahead in the formations. Just as with seeing (analysis), one should understand the same for ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind. Similarly, from manifestly creating virtuous actions, virtuous actions are accomplished, and from manifestly creating non-virtuous actions, non-virtuous actions are accomplished, etc., one should not predetermine behavior by first applying wisdom, I think that just the formations themselves are not enough. Therefore, he thinks like this: I think there is a self. To this one should say this: Does the wisdom of sentient beings arise from the very thing that is seen, or does one think that when other things are seen, the wisdom of sentient beings arises in other things? If one thinks that it arises in the thing itself, then, for form etc., because it is reversed into a sentient being, one cannot say that there is a self. If one thinks that it arises in other things, then one cannot say that the thing with shape is a self. The lowly and the noble, and the royal family etc., children and wise people, and those who hold objects such as form, cannot be said to be a self. Does the wisdom of sentient beings arise from the very nature of the dharma, or...
