Regarding that and that object, it is able to follow it and definitely grasp it. What is memory? Regarding the familiar object, it is able to follow it and clearly state it. What is samadhi? Regarding the object being examined, it is able to follow it, and definitely relying on thought, it makes the mind one-pointed. What is wisdom? Regarding the object being examined itself, it is able to follow it, and thoroughly distinguishes the dharmas, whether it is produced by reason, or not produced by reason, or neither produced by reason nor not produced by reason. Then, what does attention do? It performs the function of focusing the mind. What does contact do? It performs the function of giving a place of dwelling for feelings, perceptions, and thoughts. What does feeling do? It performs the function of generating existence and maintaining equanimity. What does perception do? It performs the function of naming, where the mind takes the mark of the object. What does thought do? It performs the function of arousing thoughts, bodily and verbal actions, and so on. What does desire do? It performs the function of generating diligent effort. What does aspiration do? It performs the function of making the object joyful, whether it is a virtue or a fault, or neither. What does memory do? It performs the function of recalling what has been thought, done, said, and remembered for a long time. What does samadhi do? It performs the function of giving a place of dwelling for wisdom. What does wisdom do? It performs the function of causing proliferation to flow, causing all afflictions, causing complete purification, and acting in accordance with it. Then, how is the establishment of the three times? Because the seeds are not different from the dharma, just as the dharma is established by whether or not the fruit is given, so too is it established. The characteristic of the cessation of fruits is the past. The characteristic of having a cause but not yet arisen is the future. The characteristic of having arisen but not yet ceased is the present. How are birth, aging, dwelling, and impermanence established? For all streams of consciousness, all streams of seeds are simultaneous.

Furthermore, distinctions are made regarding causes. There are conditions, and because of the existence of conditions, the very first dharma that arises from a previously unborn continuum is called the characteristic of the conditioned, which is birth. Its alteration is aging. This again has two aspects: alteration into a different nature and alteration through differentiation. Among these, that which arises similarly is alteration into a different nature. That which arises dissimilarly is alteration through differentiation. The moment immediately following birth is abiding. Birth is momentary, and that which does not remain for even a moment is impermanence. These also transform into the four characteristics due to the difference in time of that very dharma. There are four conditions: the causal condition, the immediately preceding condition, the objective condition, and the dominant condition. Among these, the seed is the causal condition. The immediately preceding condition is that which, following any consciousness, any consciousness is certain to arise; that is the immediately preceding condition for those. The objective condition is any object of mind and mental factors. The dominant condition is any place other than the seed, such as the eye of eye consciousness and any dharma belonging to it. The remaining consciousnesses are similar to this, because they can accept agreeable and disagreeable results. Any virtue and non-virtue, and those that are in accordance with such, are the dominant condition. Among these, the causal condition is established from the seed. The immediately preceding condition is established from the nature. That is established from the object. The dominant condition is established from the place and companions, etc. Regarding what is taught as any cause of the arising of consciousness and any condition, among these four, only the causal condition is both cause and condition. The remaining dharmas are only conditions. Regarding what is taught as virtue, non-virtue, and neutral, what is the distinction between them? Virtue is one kind, because of the meaning of being without fault. There are two kinds, having arisen...
