It should be observed. The power of the seed of the aggregate of forms residing in the mind, and the existence of conditions similar to it, sometimes a large aggregate arises after a small aggregate. Sometimes a small aggregate arises after a large aggregate, therefore the decrease and generation of aggregates are manifest. What is hardness itself? It is earth. What has become hard? It is what its seed is. Again, that hardness itself is a realm. What has become hard is hair and so on, or body and so on. What has been grasped? It is what is grasped inside. What has not been grasped? It is what is not grasped outside. Again, those seeds produced by the mind and mental factors that have been grasped are those whose characteristics have been grasped. What is the opposite of that, what has been grasped that is not grasped is what has not been grasped. Again, what is grasped is what has been grasped, because it is acknowledged as self. What is grasped is the same as before. The water element and so on should also be observed accordingly. Therefore, for all aggregates of form, at all times there are all the elements of the four great elements. For example, fire arises from rubbing dry wood, similarly, fire arises from striking stones, similarly, iron and silver and gold and so on become soft when melted and burned by fire, similarly, water arises from water crystal, similarly, due to the power of the mind's intention of those with magical powers, earth and so on, and gold and so on appear. That aggregate of form also enters through three causes, namely, arising from increase, arising from similar causes, and arising from maturation. Among them, arising from increase is of two kinds, namely, arising from increase that pervades the place, and arising from increase that causes the nature to increase. Arising from similar causes is of four kinds, namely, arising from similar causes of increase, arising from similar causes of maturation, arising from similar causes of transformation, and arising from similar causes of nature. Arising from maturation is of two kinds, namely, arising from maturation, arising from maturation, and arising from

arising from maturation. In short, the aggregate of form can be summarized as arising in dependence on six places: namely, the base place, the support place, the resource place, the sense faculty support place, the sense faculty place, and the object of concentration place. Here, in the collection of mind and mental factors, the mind also apprehends objects, and the fifty-one mental factors, as previously mentioned, from attention and so forth, up to and including investigation and discernment, also apprehend objects. Among these mental factors, how many are all-pervasive? Pervasive in all sentient beings? Pervasive in all times? Do all arise? Answer: The five from attention up to and including intention. How many are all-pervasive, arise in all, but are not pervasive in all times, nor all? Answer: Only five, from aspiration up to and including wisdom. How many are only virtuous, although not all, are all-pervasive, but are not pervasive in all times, nor all? Answer: From faith and so forth up to and including non-harming. How many are only afflictive, and are not all-pervasive, nor pervasive in all times, nor all? Answer: From desire and so forth up to and including non-awareness. How many arise in all, but are not all-pervasive, not pervasive in all times, nor all? Answer: From regret and so forth up to and including action. Here, if the sense faculty is not completely impaired, and the object also appears, and thereafter the attention that arises with it is closely present, then consciousness will arise. What is it like for the sense faculty not to be completely impaired? By two causes: namely, not having become unusable, and not being of a dull nature. What is it like for the object to appear? For example, a support, or a nature, or an object, or a time, or clear, or unclear, or all things, or just a part, if it is not obscured by the four obscurations, and is not robbed, that is, the obscuration of covering, and not making visible, and suppressing, and not obscured by deceiving the eyes, and robbed by the object, and robbed by childhood.
