That which is, is called the ground arising from meditation. From the ground of the Yoga practitioner, the ground arising from meditation is complete. After that, the ground of the Hearer is in another scripture. What is the ground of the Solitary Buddha? That should be understood in five aspects: lineage, path, actual accomplishment, dwelling, and sphere of activity. What is the lineage of the Solitary Buddha? That should be understood in three characteristics. Solitary Buddhas, even before their actual enlightenment, are by nature of a lineage with little affliction. Therefore, their minds do not engage in busyness, but engage in solitary joy. Solitary Buddhas, even before their actual complete enlightenment, are by nature of weak compassion. Therefore, their minds do not engage in teaching the Dharma and benefiting sentient beings, but engage in small activities. Solitary Buddhas, even before their actual complete enlightenment, are by nature of middling faculties and possess a nature of pride. Therefore, they desire to actually completely awaken without a teacher and without a rival. Likewise, the path of the Solitary Buddha should also be understood in three characteristics. For example, some individuals abide in the lineage of the Solitary Buddha and please the Buddhas for a hundred eons. There, they also completely ripen the continuum for their own enlightenment. Like this, in order to attain enlightenment themselves later, they become skilled in the aggregates, skilled in the sources, skilled in the elements, skilled in dependent origination, skilled in what is and is not, and skilled in the truths. That is the first path of the Solitary Buddha. Furthermore, some individuals, after pleasing the Buddhas, rely correctly on a superior person, listen to the sacred Dharma, and rely on proper attention, generating previously ungenerated roots of virtue that are in accordance with the aspects of ascertainment, such as generating the heats and peaks and acceptances, and actually accomplish them. In that very life, they are unable to actually realize the Dharma or attain the fruit of a renunciate. Like this, in order to actually realize later

, in order to attain the fruit of a renunciate, one is skilled in the aggregates, skilled in the sources, skilled in the elements, skilled in dependent origination, skilled in what is and is not, and skilled in the truths. This is the second path of a solitary buddha. Furthermore, here, some people, having pleased the appearance of the Buddha, rely completely on the noble person, listen to the noble Dharma, and rely on proper attention, thereby realizing the Dharma and attaining the fruit of a renunciate, but in all of everything, they are unable to attain the state of an arhat that is completely thorough, completely stainless, and the ultimate end of perfect pure conduct. For example, by means of a path that transcends the world, later, in order to attain the fruit of an arhat that is completely thorough, completely stainless, and the ultimate end of perfect pure conduct, one is skilled in the aggregates, skilled in the sources, skilled in the elements, skilled in dependent origination, skilled in what is and is not, and skilled in the truths. This is the third path of a solitary buddha. Among these, perfect accomplishment is as follows: here, some people, through the first path of a solitary buddha, accumulate merit for a full hundred eons, and after a hundred eons have passed, when buddhas do not appear, without a teacher, they cultivate the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, thereby directly realizing self-enlightenment and manifesting the state of an arhat who abandons all defilements. For example, here, some people, through the second and third paths of a solitary buddha, by that cause and that condition, only in times when buddhas do not appear, without a teacher, cultivate the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, thereby realizing the Dharma and even being able to attain the fruit of an arhat. Or, having attained the fruit of a renunciate, one can attain the pinnacle of the ultimate fruit that is completely thorough, completely stainless, and the ultimate end of perfect pure conduct—the state of an arhat. Among these, the first path of perfect accomplishment will become a solitary buddha who practices like a rhinoceros horn. Perfect accomplishment
