It should be understood as two: wandering and dwelling. Among them, the obstacle to wandering is: for example, residing in the assembly of noble hearers, abandoning the virtuous aspects of all the affairs of the Sangha, constantly gathering in the assembly, dwelling in alms, clinging to food, at any time, diligently engaging in temporary tasks such as robes and bowls, and delighting in this, delighting in diligent recitation, delighting in sleep when dwelling at night, and when dwelling during the day, delighting in all afflictive speech such as that of kings and thieves, delighting in not separating from the place where relatives, speakers of coming, friends, pleasing ones, and loving ones dwell, and thus, relying on the power of some who associate with them, by the force of long-term habituation, delighting in dwelling with their retinue. This is called the obstacle to wandering. What is the obstacle to dwelling? In short, dwelling in a secluded place and meditating on tranquility and insight is called dwelling. Among them, based on tranquility and insight, it should be understood that there are four kinds of obstacles: not conforming to the limbs of insight, not conforming to the limbs of tranquility, not conforming to the mindfulness of both aspects, and not conforming to the place. Because of considering oneself wise, not listening to the sacred Dharma that conforms to insight from others is not conforming to the limbs of insight. Because the actions of body, speech, and mind are unstable and wavering, one repeatedly violates the precepts, and therefore, due to regret and so on, the mind does not attain a state of dwelling. It should be known that this is not conforming to the limbs of tranquility. Because of being influenced by forgetfulness, not being good at guarding one's mind from agitation and sinking, and other near afflictions, it should be known that this is not conforming to the mindfulness of both aspects. Relying on a dwelling place that has five kinds of faults, it should be known that this is not conforming to the place, that is, many mosquitoes during the day, being tormented by the suffering of mosquitoes and other insects at night, and much fear and much harm.

And, without provisions and with an unpleasant mind, controlled by sinful friends and without virtuous spiritual friends, this is called an obstacle to abiding. These two kinds of obstacles, if summarized, should be understood as being completely abandoned by two causes: doing much to delight in samadhi, and doing much individual investigation. Among them, doing much to delight in samadhi, if summarized, should be understood as having six aspects. If one obtains samadhi but does not perfect samadhi, and also does not obtain mastery over samadhi, then one becomes skilled in tranquility, skilled in superior seeing, skilled in equanimity, and will generate more delight in samadhi. If one perfects samadhi and obtains mastery over samadhi, then one becomes skilled in samadhi, skilled in abiding in samadhi, skilled in rising from samadhi, and will generate more delight in samadhi. Among them, what is individual investigation? Wisdom that is virtuous is called individual investigation. With that wisdom, day and night, one thoroughly knows as it is that one's own virtuous dharmas increase, and also thoroughly knows as it is that non-virtuous dharmas increase, and also thoroughly knows as it is that virtuous dharmas decrease, and also thoroughly knows as it is that non-virtuous dharmas decrease. When walking and abiding day and night, when relying on clothing and alms, etc., to obtain livelihood, if one relies on individual investigation, then non-virtuous dharmas will increase, and virtuous dharmas will completely decline, or virtuous dharmas will increase, and non-virtuous dharmas will completely decline, and one also thoroughly knows these as they are. If one relies on that individual investigation, then for all the non-virtuous dharmas that have arisen, one eliminates, disparages, and definitely abandons them in a way that does not accept them, and for virtuous dharmas, one will cultivate them. These ten wise ones who belong to the two abidings, with the obstacles belonging to the two abidings
