Therefore, (in this way) one can guide oneself without being blamed or criticized. Through these five aspects, one can separately discern the second dwelling. If one becomes disciplined in this way, it should be known that one only strives for the five aspects of virtue: receiving instructions from time to time, reciting scriptures, striving for the virtuous aspect of establishing meaningful conversations, thereby enjoying the offerings given by others out of faith, completely delighting in solitude, becoming accustomed to practicing yoga in one's mind, and day and night, understanding and separately following the two dharmas that are in accordance with the factors of decline and progress, viewing samsara as a fault, and viewing nirvana as a virtue. Through these five aspects, one can separately discern the third dwelling. Even if one strives in this way, in short, one is still connected to the four sufferings: because one has not obtained any of the four fruits of a renunciate, one is connected to the suffering of the lower realms; because one has the nature of birth, old age, sickness, and death, one is connected to the suffering of inner transformation; because one has the nature of being separated from all that is pleasing, one is connected to the suffering of the transformation of what is pleasing; and because karma is what one owns, one is connected to the cause of all suffering. Therefore, one is connected to the four sufferings, and one discerns them separately through seven aspects. Through these seven aspects, one can separately discern the fourth dwelling. When one separately discerns these four dwellings through these twenty-two aspects, proper attention arises in this way: How can I be completely liberated from these four sufferings? Therefore, I also acknowledge my appearance, behavior, and bad habits, and I also accept discipline and the initial discipline. If I also promise to always strive to cultivate virtuous dharmas, then I separately contemplate and contemplate, and even if I promise these three dwellings, I will only be connected to these four sufferings, and I will not be completely liberated. Because I have not gained control over samadhi in this way, I will only be connected to suffering.
