It refers to "the dharmas of the ground." For example, from the non-learning right view to the extensive right knowledge. Why is that? Because, although the dharmas of learning are also the dharmas of the noble ones, they also appear to be related to the afflictions that are not of the noble ones. For example, the first limb, the perfect accomplishment, should be known as being for the benefit of the teachings and is extensive. For example, there are ten kinds. There is nothing higher than perfect accomplishment, and there is nothing more excellent than this. What is the perfection of listening to the holy Dharma? That is, the combination of what is taught correctly and what is listened to correctly is called listening to the holy Dharma. In short, there are two kinds of correct teaching: concordant and non-pervasive. In detail, it should be known that there are twenty kinds, for example, arising from the Bodhisattva-bhumi. There are also four kinds of correct listening, namely, without arrogance, without contempt, without timidity, and without distraction. Abandoning these four faults and listening, that is called correct listening. In detail, it should be known that there are sixteen kinds, for example, arising from the Bodhisattva-bhumi itself. What is it to make Nirvana the main thing? For example, when the Shravaka of the Tathagata abides in that perfect accomplishment, he listens to the Dharma in the manner that has been taught, focusing only on Nirvana, seeking only Nirvana as the purpose, and listening with only Nirvana as the object, not for the desire of the future, for pleasure, for gain, for respect, for fame, for sound, for verses. Not for these. That Nirvana, for example, starting from the Nirvana with remainder and the Nirvana without remainder, listening to the Dharma with an object, then the ten external dharmas that make Nirvana the main thing will arise. Starting from the Nirvana with remainder

It should be understood that there are nine dharmas that are primarily concerned with nirvana. Starting with nirvana without remainder, it should be understood that there is only one dharma that is primarily concerned with nirvana, namely, relying on the wisdom arising from listening. From this, three kinds of manifest faith will arise in the path and the fruit of the path—nirvana: faith that it exists, faith that it has qualities, and faith that one can attain it and that the method is easy. In order to accomplish the wisdom arising from thinking, having such faith, one dwells in solitude of body and mind, free from obscurations and conceptualizations. Relying on this, one can gain a very clear understanding of the meaning and subsequently accomplish the wisdom arising from thinking. Relying on this, one can constantly practice meditation and enter into respectful yoga practice, and through this sequence, one obtains the wisdom arising from meditation. Relying on this, one initiates the intention to see the faults of samsara and the intention to see the qualities of nirvana. Having become accustomed to this, one obtains the learning liberation of the path of seeing, which manifests the realization of truth, and one sees the ground. Prior to this, through familiarizing oneself with the path of meditation, one obtains the non-learning liberation, thus liberation is perfected. And the perfection of liberation is: simply the realm of nirvana with remainder. Therefore, the first nine dharmas are the main factors that arise in sequence in order to accomplish nirvana. It should be understood that what is the perfection of liberation is the main factor of nirvana without remainder. Thus, listening to the dharma primarily concerned with nirvana, it should be understood that there are five benefits. What are the five? Namely, at the time of listening, one can benefit others, one can benefit oneself, at the time of practicing, one can benefit others, one can benefit oneself, and one obtains the result of ending all suffering. The listener should listen with the intention of the speaker who is expounding the Dharma.

Therefore, when listening, one benefits others. By listening with a virtuous mind, one will understand the vast meaning of the Dharma that is spoken. Thus, one will obtain joy, great joy, vastness, goodness, and the definite arising of merit. In this way, when listening, one benefits oneself. The Teacher teaches the Dharma and accurately reveals it for the sake of engaging in practices that are in accordance with the Dharma. If one abides in the accurate practice of complete enlightenment, then during practice, one benefits others by honoring the Teacher with the nature of Dharma. By relying on that accurate practice, one attains the Nirvana with remainder, which is supremely cool. This benefits oneself during practice. In the realm of Nirvana without remainder, one attains the ultimate end of all suffering. This is called primarily focusing on Nirvana, which is accompanied by benefits. This is the extensive meaning of primarily focusing on Nirvana, and there is nothing higher than this, nor is there anything superior to this. What is the perfection of wisdom that fully ripens liberation? The perfection of the branch of insight (vipassanā) also ripens wisdom, and the perfection of the branch of tranquility (samatha) also ripens wisdom. Thus, if the mind is placed in equanimity, then the wisdom that engages with knowable objects will become completely pure. Among these, the branch of insight is solely relying accurately on a noble spiritual friend from the beginning. The branch of tranquility is fully upholding perfect morality. Among these, by engaging in relying on a noble spiritual friend, one will develop a desire to realize the true nature of knowable objects. By engaging in upholding perfect morality, one can endure the words spoken, remembered, or followed from what is seen, heard, or doubted by those who know about the decline of morality from higher morality, and similarly, the decline of rituals from rituals, and the practice of pure conduct. By relying on the desire to realize the true nature of knowable objects, one will become fond of listening.
