Either of the two views will increase, because it is controlled by the power of ignorance of dependent origination. Such a combination and association with it will not be completely liberated from the cycle of the five destinies. Abiding in the Dharma, possessing discipline, possessing a sense of shame, speaking truthfully, one's self also rejoices, and people are pleased with this. This is a verse. How does one abide in the Dharma? Having gone forth in the well-spoken Dharma and Vinaya spoken by the Tathagata, joyfully practicing the pure conduct. How does one possess discipline? Having gone forth in this way, and joyfully not causing all the disciplines to deteriorate, not acting as a guide, always doing, always abiding, correctly taking up the grounds of training and learning. How does one possess a sense of shame? Establishing by what should be established, namely sinful and unwholesome dharmas, such as those corresponding to immoral precepts, and the root of causing the precepts to deteriorate, such as the arising of bad signs, bad thoughts, afflictions, and near afflictions. How does one speak truthfully? Proclaiming sins, not concealing sins, and if a fault occurs, confessing truthfully to the wise who practice the pure conduct together, and restoring it according to the Dharma. The essence of this explanation is, in short, that the Blessed One completely revealed the pure discipline that is completely contained in four ways, namely, taking it up well and correctly, not causing it to deteriorate after taking it up, completely abandoning the cause of deterioration, and even when it deteriorates due to ignorance and carelessness, also according to the Dharma restoring it, it should be known that this is the essence. Here, seeing the sinful actions of others, thereby thinking with certainty, the bondage of karma is sinful, I should not do it. This is a verse. How does one see the sinful actions of others and thereby think with certainty? Like this

If a wise son or daughter of good family is capable of properly contemplating the Dharma, they will see those who are punished for their evil deeds, seized by those who live by providing food to the king, and offered to the king, eventually being executed as described in the sutras. Having seen this, they will think: 'Since I can see that evil and unwholesome actions in this life lead to the experience of painful results in this very life, it is better not to commit evil and unwholesome actions, not to begin or engage in these actions.' Furthermore, they will see people slaughtering sheep, crows, or pigs, and even participating in assemblies that are not in accordance with the Dharma. Because of these actions, professions, and livelihoods, they are unable to ride elephants, horses, vehicles, or palanquins, nor can they accumulate great wealth through these means. Even in secular society, these actions are condemned and criticized. If worldly people are unwilling to do this even for the sake of mere tactile enjoyment of the body, then what need is there to mention the noble ones?' Having seen this, they will think in this way and contemplate as before. Furthermore, they will see some people who are wealthy, possessing great riches and pleasures, but they are lazy and unrestrained. Because of their state, days and nights pass, pleasures gradually decline, retinues and affairs eventually decay, and virtuous qualities are completely lost. Having seen this, they will contemplate as before. Furthermore, they will see various differences in the bodies of sentient beings. Some sentient beings are blind, born deaf and mute, born mute, crippled, with severed arms, suffering from scabies or leprosy, short-lived, ugly in appearance, suffering many harms, of low birth, born into poor families, of humble reputation, of impaired wisdom, hermaphrodites, eunuchs, or of unattractive appearance. Some are not like this. Having seen this, they will think: 'Due to past evil and unwholesome actions, in this life they suffer the evil and painful results of...

From experiencing the ripening results also appearing, until thinking it is best to abandon sin, combine as before. Furthermore, those with virtuous friends, who are diligent and capable of accomplishing, such as: farming, doing business, shipping, and various immediately used industries can do well. Even if they are so capable, they see that those things that should be done are done but are completely destroyed and cannot be accomplished. From "after seeing," combine as before. Furthermore, some here renounce, definitely emerging from the household, and even if their conduct and correct behavior are consistent, such as: seeing those who lack offerings such as Dharma robes and alms, and seeing some who are not like that, then thinking like this, combine as before. Furthermore, the king or minister arrogantly sits in a high position, seeing that for the sake of their own single body, and for the sake of the small happiness of this life, they make the bodies of many lifetimes bad, and universally practice many evil deeds of body, speech, and mind that will cause much suffering. After seeing, they also think like this: Alas! King or minister, cherishing only the body of one lifetime, but not cherishing the bodies of many lifetimes; cherishing only the small happiness of this life, but disliking and not cherishing the intense suffering of many lifetimes, that is foolish! From thinking "it is good not to commit sinful unwholesome deeds," until "it is good not to practice," combine together. Furthermore, a wise son or daughter of good family obtains the divine eye, and with that divine eye he sees beings dying and being born, from there, combine extensively as it appears in the sutra, until seeing beings being born in hell, and then thinking like this: Due to the sinful unwholesome deeds of this life, the unbearable ripening results of sin in the next life are experienced, appearing from "it is best to abandon sinful actions," combine as before. Like this, son or daughter of good family
