It is the teaching of the path of transformation, and it should be known that this is a brief answer given here. Chapter Twenty-Two. O Blessed One, just as children rely on their mothers, what is the root of the two, desire and hatred? From what does the tumult of joy and displeasure arise? And from what do the mind's thoughts arise? Like the nyagrodha tree, it grows from moisture and arises from itself. Like vines spreading throughout the forest, they separately cling to desires. Just as children rely on their mothers, the root of the two, desire and hatred, arises from this. The tumult of joy and displeasure arises from this. The mind's thoughts also arise from this. Whoever knows the source from which those harms arise, those beings will abandon those harms, and in order to make those harms have no further existence here, they will cross the ocean and rivers that they have never crossed before. This is the verse. What are desire and hatred? For example, here some householders, when associating with pleasant objects or pleasant beings, will develop strong attachment; when associating with unpleasant objects or unpleasant beings, anger will arise. What are displeasure and joy? For example, here some people, upon immediately developing some faith in the Dharma and Vinaya spoken by the Tathagata, without properly examining the initial and final qualities and faults, rashly and strongly renounce enjoyment and go forth. Having gone forth in this way, they dwell mixed with householders and those who have gone forth, remembering past and future enjoyments and associations with beings, feeling pain and discomfort, and dwelling with a mind of recollection. Some have not gone forth out of faith, nor have they gone forth rashly, but have gone forth because of the king's command or out of fear of the danger of having no livelihood. Having gone forth in this way, they taste the flavor of gain and respect from Brahmins and faithful householders from time to time, thinking: Alas! There is no need to plow fields or do business,

It is good to be able to make a living when young. Alas, thinking that this is very good, they take acquisition and respect as the cause and feel very happy. What are "goosebumps" and "conceptualization"? It is like this, some here are not really ordained, nor are they ordained for the sake of livelihood, but because of faith, they are ordained solely to go from home to homelessness. However, they mingle with householders and the ordained, and do not live in solitude, but live in very remote places. When they live in very remote places, do they see something like darkness at night? Do they hear loud thunder or the sound of heavy hail? Do they hear the sound of lions, tigers, or leopards? Do they see cunning people, robbers, or non-humans appearing? Do they experience fear, apprehension, or goosebumps? Also, during the day, they rely on past and future desires, and on past and future beings, relying on attachment to generate such conceptualizations: from conceptualizations about desires to the development of conceptualizations about possessing household wealth. How are greed, hatred, and so on shown in this way? How is it that they are like banyan trees, growing from moisture? How is it that they arise from the self? "Moisture" refers to craving, which is like water, and due to its cause, all grasping arises. For this, from greed and hatred onwards, up to conceptualization, it is the general cause of everything. "Self" refers to the seeds, elements, and nature of those things themselves, from greed and hatred onwards, up to conceptualization. How do those things, from greed and hatred onwards, up to conceptualization, spread separately to those who have desires, like vines spreading in a forest? In short, individual desires have six forms. It is like this: on what basis and with what object do those who live at home generate greed and hatred? It is the desire for things that appear now, and the share that one has pursued. It is like this: on what basis and with what object do those who are ordained generate joy for the sake of livelihood? It is the desire for things that are present.
