Some people, in their previous lives, have accumulated merit through acts of generosity. As a result, they are now born into wealthy families, ranging from those with abundant riches to those with numerous storehouses and treasuries. It is like this. If asked, how can one gain a good reputation through truthfulness? It is like this: some people here cheat with measuring cups, cheat with scales, cheat with measurements, engage in deception and enticement, do not engage in sinful activities, and do not lie. Instead, they achieve enjoyment through virtuous actions that align with dharma, are just, and impartial. Others will say, "Alas, this person is virtuous, achieving enjoyment through virtuous actions that align with dharma." It is like this. If asked, how can one gain friends through generosity? It is like this: some people here possess enjoyment and wealth, are free from defilement and stinginess, and are not attached to possessions. They are content with the truth of their own being. From friends, ministers, relatives, to elders, they become friends to achieve, protect, and increase his enjoyment. It is like this. The brief answer to this explanation is: In short, the cause of reverence and the cause of attainment have been shown. Becoming famous through discipline is shown as the cause of reverence. The remaining words are shown as the cause of attainment from the power of the cause, the power of the individual, and the power of help. It should be known that this is a brief answer here. From where does the ocean recede? From where does the path recede? Where do all the sufferings and pleasures of the world cease? Eyes, ears, and likewise nose, tongue, and body, and likewise mind, where do name and form completely cease? From that place the ocean recedes, from that place the path recedes. In this place, all the sufferings and pleasures of the world cease. What is the ocean? It is the six sources of contact. Why? For example, the ocean is full of water, has water, and when touched, pleasure is earnestly completely...

Before it is exhausted and reaches its end, just as it closely nourishes all beings, including men and women, boys and girls, and even wild animals and birds, the six sources of contact are also the same. Before the water of craving's moisture is completely exhausted and reaches its end, children are closely nourished by the pleasure touched by the six realms of contact. What is the path? The path is the path of affliction and the path of karma, two types. In this context of meaning, the cause is called the path. What are pleasure and suffering? They are the aspects of feeling that arise dependent on the six sources of this life. In the realm of Nirvana without remainder, all of them cease. The brief answer to this explanation is: the pleasure and suffering of this life, along with their causes, and the pleasure and suffering of the future life, along with their causes, all cease in the realm of Nirvana without remainder. This is the brief answer here, and it should be understood as such. Who will cross the river? Who will cross the ocean? Who will abandon suffering? Who will attain purity? Faith will cross the river, diligence will cross the ocean, effort will abandon suffering, and wisdom will attain purity. This is the verse. How does one cross the river with faith? Thus, here, some people begin because of the faults of desires, listening to the Dharma spoken by the Hearers or spoken by the Buddha. Having heard that Dharma, they gain faith, and for the sake of abandoning the desire for things, for the sake of abandoning the desire for afflictions, they generate intention. Having abandoned the desires of the household through the door of things, they go forth from home to homelessness with upright faith. Having gone forth in this way, they also dwell in solitary places for the sake of abandoning the desire for afflictions. From the cause of diligence to the cause of proper attention, having abandoned the desires of all afflictions, they will obtain the samadhi of detachment from desire. Thus, they rely on faith.

It is like crossing the river of desire by making faith precede. How does one cross the ocean through mindfulness? If one does not taste the samadhi, one will not be particularly attached. In order to manifest the knowledge of the exhaustion of defilements, one focuses one's mind and thus, the mind that is placed in equanimity is completely purified and completely arises. Being upright and capable, from realizing the four noble truths to subsequently attaining the exhaustion of defilements, thus, relying on mindfulness and making mindfulness precede, one abandons the river of existence belonging to the form realm, the river of existence belonging to the formless realm, the river of views, and the river of ignorance, without exception, and thus crosses the ocean. How does one abandon suffering through diligence? For example, here, seeing the four learners who have not separated from the desire of the three realms, thinking that all connections must be completely exhausted and manifested, one relies on solitude. By dwelling in that which has initiated diligence, one does not dwell excessively with a mind entangled with desire. Even if entanglement with desire arises, one knows correctly how to emerge, thus purifying the mind from the obscuration of desire. And whatever mental suffering and discomfort arise from the cause of entanglement with desire, one will abandon them simultaneously with the entanglement of desire. Just as with desire, one should understand similarly with the cause of entanglement of the obscuration of doubt. Thus, relying on diligence and making diligence precede, one will abandon suffering. How does one become completely pure through wisdom? He abandons the five obscurations that afflict the mind, from those that do not change until nirvana, and relies solely on the unimpeded, and by dwelling in the unimpeded, one abandons suffering and all.
